STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Casual Chic

Style Advice of the Week

Clothing defines a decade. When you think of the '80s, images of brightly colored tracksuits, overly teased hair and neon sweatbands come to mind. Sure, Ronald Reagan served dual presidential terms, but that’s secondary information to what he was wearing.

When I think of the current decade, I fear for the legacy our attire will leave behind. Pajamas and sweatpants have become commonplace in the classrooms, which borderline an unofficial collegiate dress code. Clad in a casual tribal print cardigan, this Fashionista gives hope that our generation can be known for something other than Family Guy flannel pants.

Looking presentable and put together does not require constricting clothing or uncomfortable footwear; all it takes is a bit of thought and some color coordination. This Fashionista looks darling in a tribal print cardigan and matching sneakers. An oversized sweater or cardigan is the perfect go-to option when wanting to look cute and casual. I would advise against wearing leggings as pants unless your sweater can pass for a dress, and opt for a worn-in pair of jeans instead.

We must not be the most innovative generation for the '90s high-waisted jeans are already back in style. A trip to your local Goodwill, your mother's closet or NASTY GAL can give you the look of this Fashionista’s pants. Personally, I have been donning the high-waisted pant for a while and am glad this look is finally trending. Cuffing your jeans as this Fashionista demonstrates is the perfect way to adapt your outfit in the fickle fall weather.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Casual Chic

Style Advice of the Week

I’ve never been a fan of the trends that most Southern Californian guys go for. You know, the shorts with a baseball cap, tank top and, most dreadfully, flip flops look. I understand it’s comfortable and they probably think they look so cool, especially with the cap on, but riding on my high Style Guru horse, I do not accept it. I mean, could you at least try to look suitable? But when male models, more specifically Pelayo Diaz, started rocking that look but with a chic, very him spin. I had to step down from said horse.

I’m glad the Prince Pelayo-inspired look made its way to Irvine. While the male model is much more out there, and is all about statements (wearing floral print trousers and even skirts), let’s play it suburban-ly safe this time. The tank can be your best friend during the summer, if you know how to style it interestingly enough and not look like, well, you just threw on a tank top. Furthermore, there used to be a time when guys were into the skinny jean, then they stopped and returned to normal-guy jeans. No, this needs to go back to the way it was a few years ago. And, as for the Converse sneakers, I’ve always preferred the high-tops to the others because they are truly timeless. We can’t forget about the cap. I’m usually not a big fan of them but, I am a girl after all, guys seem to really like them. So, as you were.

Personally, I love being subtle about my fashion statements, but nevertheless make one. Never be afraid of adding color. Color is your friend, especially right now that’s it’s actually on-trend to combine multiple bold colors. If you are hesitant about it, remember, you can always color block, and this isn’t just a rule for girls, guys!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Casual Chic

Style Advice of the Week

On any given day around Manhattan, ladies travel the streets in everything from six inch designer stilettos and shift dresses to rubber Crocs and yoga pants. Ever wonder how to find a happy medium between such formal dressing and pajama-like comfort? This Fashionista does it so perfectly that she should trademark her look as a guide to New York City’s casual chic.

Her ensemble involves a mix of basic pieces that every stylish girl owns (see basic white button-up, leather jacket, skinny jeans), each with a trendy and unique feature that catapults this look from ordinary to, well, extraordinary. The most classic of them all, the white button-up shirt. It’s flattering enough to wear without having to tuck it in, like this Fashionista has done, because it slims the hips and allows some breathing room and movement. The skinny jeans under the white top are right on trend amongst the plethora of colored jeans out this season. The deep raspberry shade is bright but still subtle enough to remain appropriate for winter.

This Fashionista layers a leather motorcycle jacket over her white button-up for an interesting contrast in structure. The jacket has an oversized fold-over shoulder detail that creates a unique outline and the perfect foundation to layer a leopard print scarf. Animal prints are a great way to add a little bit of pizzazz to an otherwise solid colored look. For those of us who choose not to wear an all-over leopard print, a scarf like this one is a fashionable way to incorporate the trend without being too bold.

Finally, we get to this Fashionista’s pair of crystal-studded smoking loafers. The appeal of the shoe lies first in its versatility and comfort. Every girl appreciates a pair of flats that are both stylish and easy to wear. This pair can be dressed up or down and promises to take you through busy streets and subway stations without an ache or pain. This Fashionista wore hers on a day filled with classes and interning — if they can get her through that workload, they can get her through anything.

Fashionistas, the next time you are raking through your closets trying to find an outfit suited for a busy day, try to incorporate tips from this fashionable look. Mix a flattering white blouse with colored skinny jeans and a structured leather jacket. Add fun accessories, like a pair of smoking flats and a printed scarf, to jazz up your look. Then get ready for some strong cases of outfit envy as others take notice of your version of New York casual chic.
