There are plenty of fashion faux pas that eventually become the hottest trends—mixed prints and high waisted pants are just two examples of trends that have risen from geek to chic. But for me, the fashion faux pas that I once reviled and has now become my ultimate favorite trend is double denim. I’m not sure exactly when my refusal to buy jean jackets because “I’d have nothing to wear them with” turned into a desire to layer denim like it was my job, but all I know is that when I see a good Canadian tuxedo walking around Georgetown, I’m always impressed.
This year, I’ve noticed more and more Fashionistas layering different shades of denim in one outfit, but Hoya Fashionistos didn’t seem to be as keen on the trend. That’s why I was so excited to run into this week’s Fashionisto—with his stonewashed denim shirt and an expertly cuffed pair of jeans, this is a double denim look that manages to remain classic and preppy, rather than veering into the hipster genre. A dark Levi’s shirt and lighter rinse jeans from 7 For All Mankind will help you create your own version of this tuxedo.
The best part of a double denim look, in my opinion, is that just like an all black outfit or any monochromatic look, it’s essentially a blank slate. Adding aviators, loafers, and a knotted belt gives this Fashionisto’s look a classic finish, but you can take your outfit in any direction by switching up the accessories. So go forth! Create your own Canadian tuxedo and mark it fashion faux pas no more.
