STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Button Up

Uncategorized

Have any of you stayed up late the night before a school day, drastically rummaging through your wardrobe, trying to figure out the next day's outfit? If you have, you’re not the only one! I particularly had this routine during my first year of University, but it has slowly reduced since. My ritual existed around this: opening up the double doors of my wardrobe, throwing items on the bed, mixing and matching and regularly looking in the mirror to see if my outfit worked or not. I also had one of my fashion bibles (magazines) sitting on the bed, pages flicked settling on a fashion icon I admire. My fashion icons are an ever-growing list naming celebrities such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Jessica Szohr and Alexa Chung.

Considering this season’s trends, a popular trend coming out to play are collared shirts. Embracing this trend makes me think back to one of my fashion idols I admired in the past that started the collared trend in the first place: Chloë Sevigny. A daring Fashionista herself, Chloë can pull off the boyfriend shirt so effortlessly. I remember reading an article that noted how she was inspired by her father’s dress sense. Unintentionally, she rubbed off the androgynous look and it has trickled down to many of her followers till this day. Playing it cool with the dashing suits, a man’s style has never looked so good on a woman.

Collared shirts these days are all about looking chic and classy. They can be seen in nearly every store from Topshop to Jil Sander. To make dubbed man shirt look more feminine, the sleeveless look has been adapted allowing a Fashionista to show off some skin. Pair it up with a pretty skirt, knee high socks, a head band and you’ll look preppy like Blair Waldorf. If you’re still a little chilly, add a knit but make sure the shirt collar is showing! Or like this Fashionista I spotted at the Finders Keeper Market, wear a classic black shirt, a playful printed skirt and add a statement jewellery piece to bring out the plain black. If you want to try the ‘man-style’ androgynous looks or known as the Chloë Sevigny, pair black denim jeans with a long sleeve shirt, a blazer, Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses and boots. Collared shirts have also been ‘sparkled’ with super cute dazzling embellishments to lift the plain collar up. If you are bored with the plain look and still want to look a little feminine, go with the embellished collar. Remember, it’s all the small things that count! Less is more!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Button-Up

Style Advice of the Week

Welcome to the magical world of button-ups! There are so many varieties of this classic look, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. Sheer? Yes, please. Collared? Even better. Oversized? Obviously. Yes, they are all safe choices. And yes, this trend is too good to be true. If you haven’t tapped into this little secret yet, here’s your chance. You can pick and choose when it comes to the small details of your button-up… or you can just get one of each.

These blouses should be every Fashionista’s go-to. Can’t find anything to wear? Don’t have time to pick out an outfit? The button-up is the answer to all of your fashion woes. These tops have chemistry with everything you pair them with. They look great with skinny jeans and boots, shorts and sandals and skirts and heels. When there’s a button-up involved, you can easily put together a fashion forward outfit in under five minutes.

Although I could brag about button-up blouses all day, I’ll help you pick out a few prime choices to add to your wardrobe. One of my favorite looks is the drop back, like this bold blue blouse from Forever 21. Keep it basic with this oversized button-up or add some edge with shoulder cutouts or lace. With these kind of options you won't be able to choose just one, but don't say I didn't warn you!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Button Up

Uncategorized

The weather in November has been all over the place and so have the outfits around campus. One day it’s snowing and the next it’s in the 60s and raining. So whether you’re wearing a parka or sandals and shorts, you can always count on the classics. In this case this Fashionista did just that with her black cardigan (to match any occasion), a pair of khakis (rolled just enough to see her ankles) and the quintessential button up blouse. Hers is from Ann Taylor, but you can be sure to find one that suits your taste and price range almost anywhere, especially now that these (and preppy collars) have come back in style. Take a look at the fall 2010 runway at Proenza Schouler or jump ahead to the spring 2011 runway at Balenciaga and you’ll see what I mean.

The button up shirt is super versatile and easy to wear. Go to class wearing the shirt under a sweater (a la Emma Watson), to an interview with the shirt tucked into pants (like at Rag and Bone), or leave a couple buttons undone and add jeans for dinner (try this Embellished Boy Shirt from J.Crew) and you’re set.

This Fashionista’s vintage inspired look has so much detail that it is hard to pick one thing to focus on. From the space ship forearm tattoo to the orangey/red lipstick she knows how to rock her wardrobe.

But, while she may like to stand out in the crowd, there is a fashion staple in her ensemble that every inspiring Fashionista should own – a vintage blouse. While on the rack, a cotton blouse like this may look like something your brother wore to the boy scouts in the third grade, but jazz it up as this Fashionista and it can become your closet’s fall centerpiece.

By buttoning the blouse all the way to the top with a necklace under the collar and rolling the sleeves slightly added the utilitarian feel that is so popular this season. Matched perfectly with a denim pencil skirt and comfy flats, this is the perfect outfit for temperamental fall weather. Rigid with a subtle sex appeal, this outfit is good for class or catching up with old friends over some cocktails.

For a less edgy look, try pairing it with some J Brand cargos and a loose sweater. Switch the red lip to a glossy pink and let the hair down and your outfit is instantly softened for a more casual feel.

Hint: A vintage inspired blouse similar to this one may be a good investment for your closet. Long sleeve or short sleeved, silk or cotton having a blouse that goes with everything is a timeless essential. For an investment piece check out Net-A-Porter for fabulous designer finds.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Button Up

Uncategorized

Every year, I count down to the day that I can first wear a cardigan that fall. It's the first day you wake up and step outside and go, "Wow, these shorts just aren't going to work today." However, Florida weather isn't nice all day. While it may be cool in the morning, you're sweating by you 3 p.m. class. This transitional period between summer and fall calls for the best fall accessory ever made: the cardigan. I can put on a cardigan and feel like I go to a Northeastern school that has seasons, if only for a moment.

This Fashionista wears her cardigan perfectly. She took a summer dress, and layered a camel color cardigan over it. Camel is one of my favorite colors for any piece of outerwear because it goes with almost everything and it is the "it" color for fall 2010. I like this one from Banana Republic. It's ready to be dressed up or dressed down.

Another part of this Fashionista's outfit that I adored was her headband. I always have fun with my accessories, and her headband screamed fun to me. These headbands from Sephora have bows on them and come in a variety of beautiful metallic colors.

Hint: I've said it a billion times, but my favorite accessory, no matter the season is a fabulous pair of shoes. I'm really loving ankle boots this season, but just like all other accessories, have fun with your shoes. Don't be afraid to get wacky every now and then.
