Why is it that girls love to borrow guy’s clothes? Why does the easy, relaxed fit of an oversized shirt or loose fitting pants give us a bit of an attitude? Well, I don’t actually have an answer to either of those questions, but what I do know is that I’ve yet to meet a girl who doesn’t love stealing her boyfriend’s clothes. Even I love to wander through the men’s section of stores or rummage through my dad’s closet (yes dad, I was the one who stole your Brooks Brothers sweater, and no, I’m not giving it back). However, if you’re a perpetually single Fashionista like me, there’s always menswear inspired clothing to turn to. Case in point—boyfriend jeans.
In a nutshell, boyfriend jeans are either literally a pair of guy’s jeans or a pair of jeans that look and fit like they were borrowed from a guy. Think cuffed hems with a loose fit that sits low on the hips. I love the way this Fashionista paired her distressed boyfriend jeans with a leather jacket and Converse sneakers. It really adds to the boyish look of the whole outfit, yet the cut of the jacket still allows for her feminine silhouette to be visible. Above all, she looks comfortable. I know we all sometimes have those days where the thought of putting on a pair of tight jeans makes us shudder. A pair of looser fitting jeans is a great alternative to their super skinny counterpart.
Perhaps my favorite part of this trend is that no boyfriend is required. These jeans can be found in a variety of stores right now. There are so many different fits, washes and distress levels available in these jeans that you might have to try on a few before you find the perfect fit. Try checking out places like Madewell and Levi’s for a diverse selection of styles. You can pair your new loose fit jeans with a motorcycle jacket, like this Fashionista, or go for a cozier look with a comfy knit sweater. Go for a crisp white button-down and sleek flats to get that perfect business casual look.
