STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Blue Hues

Uncategorized

I remember the first time I saw an indigo blue denim jean worn by the one and only Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. Serena, known for her casual yet fashion-forward Upper East Side look, was wearing a pair of indigo blue denim jeans with knee-high studded suede boots, a preppy grey blazer, black leather gloves, a knitted scarf and an alligator handbag to accessorise. This was certainly a city chic outfit at its best. For probably the 100th time, I fell more in love with Serena’s choice of clothing. Of course I realise the costume department is responsible for Serena’s wardrobe, but I can’t help pretend that this Upper East Side New Yorker is just the girl-next-door, a fellow classmate of mine and a fashion-savvy wannabe who participates in the college’s fashion club monthly ritual: a clothing swap with designer looks galore (now I am just dreaming!).

Considering Serena is played by the stunning actress Blake Lively (may I mention she is also Chanel’s new face for the couture brand too?), it seems as though Lively even rubs off on her character’s fashion taste a bit. Out and about, Lively was caught in indigo blue capri pants worn with a white tee and glamorised with an Emilio Pucci gold jacket. Or who could forget the Michael Kors cobalt blue body con dress worn at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? If the Gossip Girl set was anything like school, then Blake earned A+ in trend reporting: blue hues are the new colour to adore.

To conquer the ultra-blue shade, the most campus-friendly outfit is to wear indigo blue denim jeans with a simple grey knit or a preppy top. Just like this Fashionista I snapped, wear a sleeveless shirt and top it off with a bold accessory that brings out the classic shirt. Add in the statement boots, a cute handbag and a boyfriend watch for a hint of Serena’s tomboyish charm. Soon enough you’ll feel like you are strutting the streets of the Upper East Side in no time!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Severe Case Of The Blues

Style Advice of the Week

One of the greatest perks of fashion is the challenge to reinvent trends and styles, and it’s a challenge Fashionista/os happily take on. We are constantly paving the way for new trends to emerge, or old ones to resurface, and causing either to happen is the fruit of our fashion labor.

This Fashionista was found showcasing the ever popular women-in-menswear trend. Her ocean blue vintage men’s shirt, from a local Chicago thrift shop, worked wonders contrasted against an all-black palette. Not only did she create an effortless outfit, but this blue hue is also right on time for spring.

As reported by both Harper’s Bazaar and WhoWhatWear, blue hues have grabbed the hearts of many fashion lovers, including the Fashionista/o family. This trend is surely one to watch this spring because it can fit the fashion likes of many people. Blue is easy to wear and simple, yet can be playful and a stylistic risk.

For those Fashionistas who want an easy, yet polished look, take notes from this Fashionista. Find your favorite blue boyfriend shirt and dress around it with neutrals, such as black or dark browns, so the blue really pops. For those who want a risk, have fun with blue hues by wearing a different blue shade in every clothing item. Mix and match a blue shirt, such as this light blue chambray shirt by Ralph Lauren with another spring 2012 trend, like a floral skirt from Nasty Gal. Either tuck in or tie the bottom of the shirt and add a strappy wedge sandal to complete the look.

Regardless of your blue-hued preference, make sure to take advantage of the fun and variety this trend provides. Surely there are new styles to be created and others to be re-created, which Fashionista/os can surely do.
