STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Wardrobe That Can Weather It All

Style Advice of the Week

This April, the old saying “April showers, bring May flowers” has never been so true. For the past few weeks, New York has been as cold and dreary as when I was abroad in London, and pulling on the winter sweaters and raincoats after a few sunny days in the beginning was more than a little painful. I caught this Fashionisto roaming around campus on one of those days when the sun seemed to be playing hide-in-go-seek with the clouds. He looked ready for any weather that may come his way, and his bright smile and sunny disposition seemed to transcend the cold weather clothes he wore. I was first attracted to his laid back demeanor and hardcore backpack, then realizing he had perfected the coveted “I look good but I don’t care” style that many men aspire to and women gravitate towards. This look is perfect for most college men who do not want to look like they are trying too hard but still want to be noticed.

To attain a style like this, first give your wardrobe a little makeover. Invest in a few great pieces; a well-made and memorable backpack, a pair of jeans that fit you perfectly, a great raincoat or parka, stylish yet understated sneakers and a few sweaters that you can wear interchangeably. To start off this wardrobe transformation, look for the perfect raincoat. Do not be scared to splurge on this piece as a good raincoat can last you years. Just be sure to get something somewhat simple rather than something that is on-trend as you may outgrow it by next season. Try a sturdy and functional jacket like this beige Carhartt Mission Jacket from ASOS, or this thin parka from American Apparel that is easily stuffed in your bag and is great for those summer showers. Then look for a timeless Cosby sweater, the favorite piece of many college students on the East Coast. For a real vintage sweater à la The Cosby Show in the ‘90s, try this one from Etsy. For a more modern spin on an oldie but goodie, try this rag & bone crew neck sweater from Barneys New York. For shoes like this Fashionisto, try these Vans, perfectly worn look sold separately. Finish off your wardrobe with the cherry on top: the backpack. This is an item that you will use everyday and will probably handle with little care, so be sure to buy a sturdy bag that you absolutely love and will never grow tired of. For a unique but very manly backpack like this Fashionisto, get the weatherproof Yalta bag from Chrome. This is the favorite brand of many New York City messengers. So gentlemen, don’t stuff your wardrobes with too many flashy and on-trend pieces, pick a few classics that make you feel good and look great in, and I promise the compliments will keep on coming.
