STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instincts

Style Advice of the Week

You don’t have to live on a farm or make a trip to the zoo to see animals this winter; besides, they smell a little funny. More conveniently, animal print has been spotted in fashion. You may think, wait, hasn’t it been around for ages? Not this feisty print. From sweaters to scarves, fashionable images of animals have been unleashed. Animal sweaters are no longer reserved for kindergarten teachers and obsessive animal lovers. You too can welcome animals into your home and closet this winter.

Prowling campus I spotted this Fashionista capturing various animalistic trends. She demonstrated her chestnut brown boots could dress up her basic blue jeans much like they can dress up any outfit, including a basic cotton dress and tights. Also, this camel toggle coat is ideal for any nippy winter day. Last but certainly not least, her sweater captured my attention. The fashionable, warm chick portrays cozy and adorable.

Thinking about stepping foot into the cold to make the long journey to class can be a little daunting. Like myself, you may stare at your closet for an unreasonable amount of time only to decide to wear a comfortable sweater. Forget about the basic black or beige cable knit sweater; try a sweater printed with your favorite animal. You can throw on this amusing sweater over jeans with boots like this Fashionista or put it on over your favorite dress with tights.

The fashion kingdom is loaded with a variety of animal attire beside animal print sweaters. For the bitter cold try a scarf printed with zebras. When you get tired of wearing pants everyday to walk to class put on a dress pattered with foxes. The Americana look can be achieved with an eagle printed top and a cardigan. Your fingers and neck can be adorned with animal inspired jewelry as well. Another option is a wallet adorned with a leopard head. No matter what creature strikes your animalistic fancy there is something for everyone.

Go with your instinct and unleash your inner animal in animal printed attire.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instincts

Style Advice of the Week

There were many parts about this Fashionista’s outfit that made me decide to feature her this week. From her classic Louis Vuitton Speedy, to her perfectly layered top half, she reminded me of one of those stylish fashion bloggers from Pinterest that look so put together no matter what. When I went to take a detailed shot, I laughed as I realized that she had a family of meerkats on her sweater. I asked, “Why meerkats?” and she told me that they were her favorite animal to see at the zoo; so when she saw this sweater at Madewell, she just had to have it.

Sweaters have always been a wardrobe staple for any Fashionista during the colder months, so why not make yourself stand out and sport a sweater adorned with your favorite critter? Sweaters with different animals on them are no longer just for your grandma or five year old sister. Urban Outfitters has jumpers featuring polar bears, owls and tigers. Topshop also carries several cozy knits donned with various creatures.

Another component that I loved was how well this Fashionista layered a blouse under her sweater. Sometimes it can be difficult to find pieces that work perfectly for layering. Her collared shirt is the perfect length to wear under her sweater, and the red adds a nice splash of color to her otherwise neutral ensemble.

To achieve this Fashionista’s look, try checking out the classic shirts at places like J.Crew to find just the right items to layer with. Tall brown boots and a leather jacket are two more must-haves that every Fashionista should have in their closet this fall. And of course, don’t forget to add a little flair to your sweater by featuring your favorite furry friends!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instincts

Style Advice of the Week

When it comes to animal prints, people either skimp on the styling or they overdo it and end up looking too feline. A majority of fashion icons advise people not to mix too many trends at the same time; while I normally would agree with this motto, I believe that balancing patterns and textures is key. I spotted this Fashionista over the weekend sporting a pair of chic leopard print flats, perfectly balanced with a dark coat and fun colored jeans.

Color blocking is the easiest way to create this Fashionista’s simple and stylish outfit. First, pair your favorite colored jeans with a neutral tank top — I recommend black or white. With that as the base of your outfit, there is an ample amount of options of where you can insert an animal print. DVF is known for her fun prints and her Botswana Haircalf Flats are a perfect addition to a spring wardrobe. Because the lower half of your outfit is very bright and will attract a lot of attention, it is crucial for your top to be simple, but also complimentary.

This Fashionista topped her outfit off with a grey sweater with small metallic accents and a fun patterened oversized watch. This Soft Cozy Sweater is super comfortable and the high neck keeps the outfit conservative. The fun part about modern watches is that they come in so many different styles and colors, and they are also a great way to add another fun pattern into your outfit without distracting from the colored pants and funky flats. La Mer Collections has created the Turquoise Crystal Chain Wrap Watch which perfectly combines jewelry and a classic timepiece into a fun statement piece.

All animal prints can be treated like a neutral or as a pop of color, but no matter how you choose to wear it, it is important to balance it with your personal style and with your own wardrobe. Be fun, be outrageous, even be daring enough to try out a few animal prints at once — just be careful not to look like a cat lady a few decades too early!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instinct

Style Advice of the Week

It’s no secret that animal print has taken over the fashion scene this season. From textured cheetah flats to headbands and even belts, it seems like almost everywhere you look, Fashionistas and Fashionistos alike are channeling their inner animal and taking a chance on some pretty outrageous prints.

I caught this Fashionista out on a weekend shopping trip and was instantly drawn to her leopard scarf. Accompanied by her leather bag and camel Tory Burch flats, her scarf finished off her outfit and adds just the right amount of attitude to give her a sassy edge. This Fashionista has some serious animal instinct and she isn’t afraid to show it.

While the animal print trend may be an intimidating one, don’t be afraid, as there are lots of ways to incoportate a little animal flair into your favorite outfits! Looking for a scarf similar to this Fashionista's? Try out a super cute infinity scarf, which is sure to be an eye catcher. To achieve a more subtle look, try a printed belt like this one by Michael Kors. It is the perfect addition to a plain outfit that needs a little color. One thing you can’t forget about when it comes to the animal trend is shoes. For a little spice try out these fabulous pumps or these flats, which are seriously a steal! Finally, for a more classic look, try out this animal-inspired blouse with your favorite pair of dark skinny jeans. Every Fashionista/o deserves to get a little wild with his or her wardrobe, so get inspired by this week’s Fashionista and let out your animal instinct.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instincts

Being back in Boston is a great feeling, although the adjustment is definitely difficult. New York City is one of the fashion capitals of the world — a feat which Boston cannot achieve. In Boston, the way to make a statement is to wear a Bruins Stanley Cup t-shirt or cover your head from the heat with a Red Sox cap. However, such looks do not make headlines in Vogue and Elle magazine. To find a truly stylish individual, I look to my final New York Fashionista for the year, who wears a leopard print button-down blouse, black high-rise skinny jeans, and oxford loafers.

We’re all familiar with the Jersey Shore and Russian Dolls animal print craze. We often forget that it can be an actual trend because Snooki and her crew make such a disgrace of the pattern. Even so, animal patterns including leopard print and snakeskin have been popping up in stores everywhere as Fall Fashion Week and Fashion Night Out approach. Do not be fooled, you can still look glamorous in leopard print; after all, the new Banana Republic Mad Men line features a leopard print wool cardigan for the fall. You can even find yourself some hot Steven Madden leopard print peep toes (I’m currently obsessed with them). My all-time favorite animal print accessory for the season is the Harlow Snakeprint Envelope clutch from BCBGMAXAZRIA — it comes in teal, white and gray, so you can find one to suit your tastes.

Remember ladies, animal print can look sexy and you do not need to restrict yourself to tops. Feel free to try your hand at animal print shoes, pants, scarves, you name it!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Animal Instincts

The spring and summer ready-to-wear lines this year absolutely blew me out of the water. You had bold, in-your-face patterns, colors, and stripes from Prada, unapologetically man-repelling harem pants and beautifully tailored jackets from Zac Posen's Z-Spoke and Mugler had the Fashionista-to-end-all-Fashionistas, Lady Gaga herself,  in his Paris runway show.  The theme for this summer is anything vibrant, patterned, layered or eye-grabbing, and doing it with sass.

Since (sadly) we can't all afford one of Muiccia Prada's wildly fabulous hand-dyed neon mink stoles to make an outfit pop, a more subtle way to make a statement of individuality that has been prevalent this year is animal print, and lots of it.  Now, before you get carried away like Nicki Minaj did at the Grammy's this year (my goodness woman, what were you thinking?!) let's take the animal rage down a notch.

This Fashionista vamped an already stellar outfit  with some to-die-for leopard print pumps.  Her loose rust-colored top was expertly (and comfortably, she added) paired with black skinny jeans, an arm-fiesta of rings and bracelets, and a quirky necklace to polish off the look.  I pine. I perish. I WANT! So effortlessly chic with the right amount of sass and pizzaz.  I won't be surprised if her animal magnetism pulls in a herd of interested onlookers.

We all know that animal prints have been taking over the fashion scene, but like any style, wearing them right is key for any Fashionista. Having said that, this Fashionista is a great example of how to show off your animal instinct on a night out.

Leopard print comes in all colors, and spot sizes can vary, but I think this Fashionista
