STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Tied Up

Uncategorized

This warm weather and your every day college student seem to agree on one thing: diversity! And if that rubs off as me complaining, I’m definitely not! I’m enjoying this new crop up of ties, crops, cut-offs and sheers. Summer has definitely brought out the best of the Fashionistas and Fashionistos at DePaul! I’m here to give some style advice that I’ve seen on everyone from students to stylists to our favorite celebrities like Keira Knightley– the tied top! Now normally I’m one of those girls who tends to be a little wary about showing my tummy, but this is a trend over which I've died and gone to heaven! Why? Because even those of us who haven’t spent all “spring” getting our tummies toned and tanning-ready can work with this trend!

First you have to ask yourself three questions. First, high-waisted or hip? Second, tank or short sleeve? And third, simple or chic?

Want to try high-waisted? Follow what this Fashionista did and go with a pair of high-waisted shorts or jeans and a simple tied button-up.

If you want to rock it hip level, I suggest we skip right to question number two! Tank or short sleeved? If you want to rock it tank style, I fully suggest not going the high-waisted route and sticking with good old denim jeans!

Now for our last choice of the day…simple or chic? Well we’ve already gone over the simpler options so let's go with chic here ladies! If you want to put a more high fashion spin on this festival-friendly trend, try going for pastels and neutral shades in a sheer fabric! It's a great way to wear something with a bit more of a loose fit and longer sleeve but not find yourself overheating!

And a bit of parting advice for wearing the tied trend…when in doubt, don’t forget the fabulous vintage ways to style this look as well!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Tied Up

When it comes to footwear, Fashionistas everywhere have been lacing up. We saw the lace-up bootie trend in the fall and the return of Oxford shoes in the spring, and now laces are back in style for the summer too. Cutout lace-up flats, like this pair by Jeffrey Campbell add trendy style to your flirty floral dresses and skirts. They instantly make any outfit look edgy and Bohemian chic.

This Fashionista looks stylish and ready for summer in her lace-up flats. These fashion forward shoes have a vibrant, tribal print that give an urban touch to any outfit. The basketweave design and lace-up front make the shoe more girlish than menswear-inspired Oxfords, and the low heel is equally comfortable for walking. These flats retain the dainty, Oxford style but with a pop of playful vintage design. Her flowy floral skirt is effortlessly feminine. I like how she wears her skirt tucked in with a basic tee – it looks more put together and flattering, and the solid top doesn’t overwhelm the print. Her oversized cardigan is the perfect layering piece for any season, and its lightweight material is perfect to drape over your shoulders when the sun goes down. Her necklace adds a flash of color to her plain tee and the chunky pendant emits a boho vibe.

Follow in the footsteps of this Fashionista and put your best foot forward this summer in lace-up sandals. These shoes have more edge than ballet flats or gladiator sandals and the cutouts let your feet breathe in the warm weather. The vintage style and design give your summery outfits something extra.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Tied Up

Uncategorized

These past few seasons we have seen a wave of army inspired fabrics and details make their way through the streets and runways. While the original army print is yet to make a comeback, I can't help but notice the amount of combat inspired trends on campus. The latest to grace us is the combat boot itself. Sported on campus by both the punks and preps alike, this boot can be seen with every look! Similar to the likes of the Doc Martin, this rugged boot easily adapts to cargo pants (like today's Fashionista's) or a skirt and tights. Both practical and fashionable, it is no wonder that ladies and men alike have taken this boot and made it their own this season.

Ready to set in line and rock it as well? It doesn't take much adjustment to ones wardrobe to fit this boot in. Looking for something a little softer? Stick to a dark brown that will have softer detailing and will mix well with creamy toned clothing. Tan is also a good option for those looking to play it safe. If you lean towards a canvas boot, similar to a desert boot, it will give the shoe a totally different feel. This black boot is for anyone with an attitude. It is hard to notice in the photo, but our featured Fashionista actually rocked a combat boot with a heel!  A heel is a great way to add a feminine touch to this tough look.

Hint: From personal experience, this is a boot best tried on. Find a boot that suits your height and hits you correctly in the leg. Otherwise, look for a boot that you could cuff down to add volume!
