STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All In The Details

Style Advice of the Week

At first glance, this Fashionista's outfit looks simple, but still chic and put together. As you examine the look more carefully, however, things get a lot more interesting. Her attention to small details really makes this ensemble shine—it is exactly why she is featured as this week’s Fashionista.

This student paired a cozy black sweater with saddle colored jeans, motorcycle boots and a cross-body bag. While it would be stylish in anyone’s book, the extra details really make her outfit fashionable. A deep cutout in the back of the sweater is tied together with a sweet white bow. Tiny leopard print adorns her super cute jeans. Grommeting around the top of her boots add an unexpected edge to an otherwise tame outfit. Navy-and-green tartan print amps up her school bag, surprisingly working well with the animal print. An intricate, braided bun replaces any notion of a humdrum hairstyle. Overall, the look is top notch and it thrills me that I came across a Fashionista that put such care into the small details in her outfit.

Putting together a similar look is ideal for those of us who are looking to add a little edge without straying too far away from our everyday style. The trick is to select pieces that have a small twist to them, but would also blend in flawlessly with your regular wardrobe. For instance, if you’ve been lusting after printed jeans, but can’t imagine yourself in bold patterns, try these Christopher Blue jeans with a subtle paisley print. If you love the look of leather, but don’t think you could pull off a full motorcycle jacket, try a piece with leather accents like this sweater. Beaded details rev up this demure chiffon blouse. Hiking boot laces make these feminine heeled booties adorably kitschy. These are just a handful of options for this look. Remember, you are free to pick any aspect of an outfit and give it a little edge.

So fellow Fashionistas, if this week’s student has taught me anything, it’s to appreciate the small things. And how apropos of a message as we near Thanksgiving, no?

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All In The Details

Style Advice of the Week

In fashion, things aren’t always what they seem. At first glance, this Fashionista’s outfit is rather simple: pink top, denim shorts, gladiator sandals and a black bag. But, when one takes a second, closer look, it’s really the details that complete the outfit. Let’s start with this Fashionista’s fitted, neon pink top. If you’re loving the ruffle,  I found a similar ruffled top from J.Crew. Her top seems simple, but take a look and there is so much more. The ruffles and the lace bandeau add so much to this outfit, showing the importance of the details. Even the cuffs on her denim shorts add an extra punch of style. As for accessories, check out the coordination between the gold sandals and the black, patent leather Ted Baker tote with gold metalwork. The accessories also coordinate with this Fashionista’s tortoise shell Michael Kors watch, paired with silver and gold bangles.

From the ruffles and cuffs to the perfect combination of accessories, this Fashionista’s outfit is all about the details. As you put together your outfits this summer, remember the details that you might not notice at first, can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to try different necklaces, bracelets, bags and shoes, you name it. Some of the best advice I have heard about accessorizing is from Coco Chanel, who said, “When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.” I believe this is important advice to listen to because it is easy to get caught up in all of the fabulous accessories you have and try to wear them all at once. Also, remember that accessories are meant to complement the outfit and, most importantly, bring attention to the person wearing them. Try a necklace that brings the attention to your face, or a belt that cinches your waist perfectly.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All In The Details

Style Advice of the Week

A downside about dressing for the college lifestyle is that outfits can become mundane and repetitious very quickly. Even the greatest Fashionistas surrender to early morning exhaustion or the stress of exams and don’t pull together a runway ready look every morning. But fashion doesn’t have to be so luxurious and flashy, especially for days that consist of sitting in class or writing essays. This week’s best dressed is all about the accents. This Fashionista embraces the fact that sometimes the little things have the biggest impact. Simple details like a scarf and lace trim amp up her casual outfit and make this Fashionista camera ready.

One spring trend that is perfect for the busy Fashionista is cut-off denim shorts. Denim shorts are my go-to for warm spring days and this season designers are adding simple touches like studs, lace or fringe to make the average pair of shorts a little more unique. I am obsessed with the lace detail on this Fashionista’s pair from Free People and love the crochet on the bottom of these shorts from Urban Outfitters. There are so many different takes on the classic pair of shorts that every Fashionista is bound to find at least one that matches their personal style, adding the perfect detail to any outfit.

Another detail that I love about the pictured outfit is her Lilly Pulitzer printed scarf. Lilly is famous for her bright and colorful prints that are perfect for sunny spring days. What made this print different from others that I have seen is that it is part of the Lilly Pulitzer sorority print collection. Over the past year or two, Lilly has been designing prints that represent many sororities and their colors and symbols. These prints are such a fun and unique way to represent your sorority and this Fashionista uses her Kappa Kappa Gamma printed scarf to add interest to her simple outfit.

Even the busiest Fashionista can embrace the use of simple details to break from any mundane fashion choices!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All in the Details

Style Advice of the Week

The crisp, inaugural days of autumn on a collegiate campus are an experience in itself. As the climate cools, stylish students pack up their summertime staples to prepare for this sensational season. Where fall comes, great fashion follows, especially for menswear. Designers walked some seriously stunning gentlemen down their fall 2011 runways sporting everything from Chelsea Boots to varsity jackets. Needless to say, Penn State’s dapper dudes are definitely taking note.

Campus appropriate trend application is truly the name of the game for CollegeFashionistas/os, and this Fashionisto was an exemplarily specimen of two of this season’s hottest trends. Chinos and monk strap shoes were two of the season’s most sensational looks at fall 2011 fashion week. Working winter khakis gives guys a fantastic alternative to the usual corduroy and denim and was featured by menswear powerhouses like Balmain and Ralph Lauren. The style is great with boots and looks awesome in darker hues for the chillier months. This Fashionisto chose a creamy, light khaki as a cool transition into autumn. Also noteworthy are this Fashionisto’s killer monkstrap inspired sneakers. Hermès, Prada and Gucci all featured luxe monkstrap shoes in shades of all sorts. This shoe has a great feel and is impeccably chic. This sneaker adaptation is awesomely collegiate and cool with his chinos and chambray shirt.

When working with new trends, find ways to incorporate them into your current look. I love how this Fashionisto brilliantly mastered two of this season’s styles by simply altering the medium (monkstrap sneakers?! so cool).  Put this into practice by making trends wearable and comfortable for campus.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All in the Details

Uncategorized

Beneath the accessories, this Fashionista’s outfit would seem very simple: blue skinny jeans with a plain black top. Although simplicity is never bad, too simple of an outfit can make you fad into the background. Personally, I rely on basics. Basics can be worn over and over again each time with different accessories that give your outfit a new feel. Every Fashionista should have in their closet a V-neck, a dress, a pair of perfect fitting jeans, a pencil skirt and a cardigan in neutral colors that can be worn in variation regardless of season or weather. Accessories are however vital to putting together a trendy and stylish outfit.

Today's Fashionista accessorized her simple outfit with a purple cardigan sweater, printed scarf, and moccasins. The ethnic print of the scarf and the moccasins work together in style thereby creating an outfit that is cute, casual and simple but not at all boring. A scarf is an easy accessory to complement any outfit. This decorative accessory has practical origins: it was a piece of fabric worn by women around their heads in order to protect their hairstyles. Since then the scarf has become a must-have, in part by designers such as Hermes who turned the scarf into a luxury item and Emilio Pucci who redefined colorful prints.

Scarves come in all different textures, fabrics and sizes and can born an unlimited amount of ways. As the weather turns try a printed or neutral circle scarf to keep you warm or throw on a scarf to add some color and spice up any outfit. But do not limit yourself to wearing scarves only around your neck. Try something new and tie it as a turban, a trend that has been popping up all over street style blogs.
