STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Buttoned Up

Style Advice of the Week

There is something so simple, so classic about this week’s Fashionista that made me use her as inspiration. My favorite trend right now is a collared shirt, buttoned all the way to the top. Buttoning all of the buttons on your shirt used to be something only nerds would do but since dressing nerdy is now deemed cool, this is a different way to style your top that works for both boys and girls.

My favorite aspect of this Fashionista’s ensemble is the way her collar is adorned with an array of sequins. It’s a small embellishment such as this that adds an aesthetic surprise and makes an otherwise ordinary sheer blouse that much more interesting. She finishes off her outfit with some dark wash skinny jeans and a pair of casual nude suede wedges.

A shirt with an unusual detail on the collar is something you should try to incorporate into your winter wardrobe. Buttoning your shirt all the way to the top really makes the decorations on the collar stand out even more. Try embellishing with pearls with this blouse from Urban Outfitters, or opt for a minimalist look with a simple metal tipped collar from Topshop. You could even make a D.I.Y out of it and revamp a shirt you already own! Guys, try buttoning your standard plaid shirt to the top to emulate a British schoolboy and channel your inner nerd.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little tweaking to make your outfit more interesting. Take a tip from this Fashionista the next time you’re feeling bored with your blouses.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Buttoned Up

Style Advice of the Week

This Fashionisto does a great job of layering his flannel button down and cashmere V-neck. Flannels are a definite staple during the cold winter months, and I love how this Fashionisto has dressed his flannel up by buttoning it all the way to the top and wearing it under a nice charcoal sweater. Flannels are extremely versatile, making them a great investment. I love this classic plaid shirt by life/after/denim. For girls, this IRO Ionina Plaid Shirt is great. I love the distressed look of the shirt, giving it a genuine worn feel. You can wear these plaid shirts numerous ways. You can simply wear them open over a white t-shirt and jeans, or buttoned up and tucked into a high-waisted skirt.

This Fashionisto leaves just the collar of his flannel poking out of his V-neck sweater. His layered look not only keeps him warm, but also makes his outfit look thoughtful and refined. A nice cashmere sweater is yet another winter staple: so simple, yet so necessary. You can keep it really simple with a sweater like this Grey Basic V-neck Sweater by Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen, or go with a sweater with a little more bulk and texture like this Elgin Oversize Cable Knit Sweater by Acne.

One of my favorite components of this outfit, though, is the Fashionisto’s drop jeans, which can often be scarce to find around these parts of Connecticut. For a similar pair, try these Medium Indigo Drop Skinny Jeans by OAK. I think these have a great shape and show a lot of personal style.

I love how this Fashionisto uses basic items of clothing, and yet combines them to create an outfit that is stylish and unique. I also love the androgyny of the outfit, and girls as well as boys can get great fashion inspiration from the pictured Fashionisto.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Buttoned Up

Uncategorized

Layers, scarves, boots, hats – there are plenty of reasons to love fall fashion, but the most essential article of clothing for a Fashionista in the cold is the timeless coat. Whether you’re 8 or 80, a good coat is a must have for the cold weather. But aside from protecting you against the win, rain, and whatever other elements you might find yourself up against this season, the wide variety of coats offer a unique chance for self-expression. While there are distinct dress vs. casual coats, for the most part, jackets come in such an array of colors and patterns making it appropriate in the cold weather to wear brights, checkers, and polka dots that maybe you’d reserved strictly for the summer.

I love how this Fashionista brightens up the dreary Nashville day with her deliciously bright Marc by Marc Jacobs Sonia Sateen Jacket. Great for covering up a stylish ensemble, this coat also makes its own fashion statement, with big gold buttons and a punchy color that looks gorgeous against the changing fall foliage around campus.

This season, the only rule for your outerwear is this: there are no rules. Long to cropped, oversized to fitted, fur to fringe, anything goes. With the bountiful selection of jackets you’ll be sure to find one that speaks to you as a Fashionista/o. But just as a helpful guide, I’ve selected a few coats to demonstrate some of the big trends happening now. It’s no secret that fur is huge this season, and whether you stick to faux or the real deal, there’s no better way to stay warm and stylish. I love the understated look of this state and lake bomber jacket, the long fur keeping it subtle and classy. To combine the fur and trench coat trends simultaneously, check out this faux fur collared long coat from Urban Outfitters.

Or for the girl on a budget who’s looking for something a bit more classic, Forever 21 has an amazing deal on this classic trench coat that stays up to date in a rich camel hue. Lastly, if our Fashionista this week has inspired you to dabble in some color, the double-cloth lady day coat from J.Crew comes in over 10 colors, sure to warm and wow at the same time! And who could forget, my favorite part of coat shopping is its convenient timing with the holidays. They always make it on a wish list with plenty of time for the parents, Santa, or whoever is gathering your gifts to pick up your perfect parka! Happy hunting.
