STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

We’ve finally made it! We have all survived the grueling hours spent in the library hovered over books, notecards and the computer screen. We have taken these finals by the reins and whipped them into shape and now, it is time for a little relaxation. After finals week it would be hard to fathom that these Fashionistas and Fashionistos here at Wake Forest University had the brain power to even pull together an outfit, but never underestimate the willpower of an individual who loves fashion!

This season it has been about how to wear your metallics, neons and colors galore but the real challenge is wearing an all black outfit and picking the right colors to accompany the color! Black has taken a turn for the best this fall with the new trends of leather and color blocking and our Fashionistas and Fashionistos are turning with it! According to Harper’s Bazaar, black is no longer wack!

This week’s Fashionista wears her black and she wears it proud! In the week after finals she has chosen to stay stress-free, yet chic by pairing black leggings with a black oversized, scoop neck T-shirt. Then, to pull the look together, she throws a cognac-colored bomber jacket on and matches her lace-up cognac-colored boots! A simplistic necklace featuring a single jewel hangs from her neck and a woven headband to complete the outfit. I must say this Fashionista embodies the look of fashion and relaxin’!

To imitate this Fashionista’s look, visit your local Forever 21 for comfortable yet affordable leggings and oversized shirts! And remember when in doubt, black can actually make you stand out. Also check out your local Macy's to find boots just like this Fashionista!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

There is nothing more iconic than the color black. It’s always in, always classic and always chic. You can never go wrong with a murdered out ensemble, from your shoes to your blouse. Maybe it’s just me, but a wardrobe isn’t complete without at least one of everything in black: jackets, bags, jeans and hats—the list goes on. Another thing my wardrobe isn’t complete without is a black blazer. It instantly takes an outfit up a notch and is absolutely essential for sleek, business casual. Let’s be honest, it can take your comfiest skinnies and favorite plain white tee and turn it into a sophisticated ensemble perfect for every-day wear.

This week’s Fashionista was seen wearing a black boyfriend blazer with a black blouse paired with textured black and grey skinnies and topped it off with the perfect carry-all black bag. Her bright pink lips add a pop of color and blonde hair adds nice contrast and reflected her bubble personality! To style a boyfriend blazer as this Fashionista did, pair these skinny jeans with a loose fitting black blouse and this blazer. A black blazer also looks great with light denim. Pair these denim cutt-off shorts with a loose fit white T-shirt and black blazer. Style with black combat boots or minimal black heels for a sophisticated look. I also love cropped black blazers paired with a high-waisted full-length skirt. Try this chiffon double layered American Apparel skirt and cropped blazer.

A black blazer is an essential wardrobe piece. Black blazers are no longer just for the work place; they’re sophisticated, edgy and sharp.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Uncategorized

With the gloomy weather very clearly here to stay in Moscow, I’ve noticed that the outfits have followed suit. Dreary hues and an absence of primary colors has started to plague our campus. I’ve also noticed a huge increase of the sweats and yoga pants partnered with a cozy pair of UGGs.

I was close to giving up hope of finding an ensemble that matches the weather while still being totally chic. But stumbling upon this Fashionista restored my faith. Her all black outfit was positively perfect. Normally I would recommend staying away from head-to-toe dark, for obvious reasons, but I have to admit that this look has changed my general opinion.

Black is a great basic for any season and can easily be paired with pretty much anything. A great pair of black jeggings are the perfect alternative to your yoga pants or sweats and are just as comfortable but much more fashionable.

When wearing all black, it’s important to give your outfit some sort of dimension. This Fashionista did that with a chunky knit scarf. It stands out from the outfit so her outfit gets a little bit of texture and keeps it from being monotonous and boring.

This is also a great opportunity to accessorize. Layering on bracelets is another good way to give your look a little bit of dimension. Or instead try a bright cocktail ring or statement necklace to give it a pop of color.

So please, ladies, put the sweats down and grab a pair of black skinnies instead. Don’t get the gloom get you down, or your outfit!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

There is something about an absence of color that translates to ultra chic in the fashion industry. Wearing black from head to toe not only makes you appear sophisticated and significant, but intimidating and idolized. Black is a statement hue that many New Yorkers wear everyday to achieve a certain standard of style in a very minimalist way. On the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris, many designers surprised the fashion world and showed collections consisting of darks for spring 2013. Black was one of the most popular of those dark hues, illustrating an exceptional influence on fashion to come.

Head to toe black is not a difficult task to accomplish, but with so many new Yorkers embracing this trend on the streets, you want to make sure your head to toe black ensemble is one that stands out. This Fashionista caught my eye with her dark get up by dressing simple and refined without jeopardizing her uniqueness and personality. Her simple sheer maxi skirt and leather jacket complemented each other perfectly, and her fun, clean-cut accessories truly made her look one to worship.

Black is usually a staple color in a garment, but push yourself to try on something out of your comfort zone to make your next black purchase an investment worth while. A black dress is always a good investment, and will transition well into the spring season. Every Fashionista should also have a black skirt  they can mix and match with their favorite pieces. A black jacket is another crucial investment piece. These are all pieces you’ll find yourself wearing season after season, time and time again. Hopefully you’ll get the recognition deserved wearing all black everything, but always remember that you wear the outfit, the outfit doesn’t wear you.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

What is one thing that many Fashionistas love to wear? Surprisingly, it is Black. This hueless color is super easy to wear, it is timeless and it can go with basically anything. It shows power and authority. It is the perfect color for one of those days where you just do not feel like getting ready, but still want to look good for class. Another great thing about black is that it is super flattering, this means anytime you put it on you are basically guaranteed to look great. When I spotted this Fashionista I thought she added a lot of life to this dreary color.

Wearing black from head-to-toe can be a little much and may give off the gothic feel and a negative connotation. However, the cut out shoulders and graphic print on this Fashionista’s shirt were the perfect way to break up the all black look. Shoulders are a very flattering part of almost every girl’s body and every Fashionista should show them off. This T-shirt is easy and great for going to class in. For a fabulous going out look, this dress is perfect for sticking with the black look, but also showing off those shoulders. And this starry black tank top can go from day-to-night with jeans and boots to jeans and heels.

I know black is my favorite color to wear and I have it in some part of my outfit practically everyday. It is super versatile and can be worn so many ways. It’s time to look in your closet and see the different ways you are able to incorporate this color into your amazing outfits.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

The month of September means one thing and one thing only: fashion. With New York Fashion Week on the cusp of arrival and the Vogue Fashion Issue on display at every style-conscious person’s coffee table, September sets the tone for the year of fashion. Similarly, the first weeks of September are also a great foretelling for the beat of the school year, too. And although the grading scale of your chemistry syllabus isn’t nearly as stimulating as Anna Wintour’s “From the Editor,” it’s still necessary to recognize that styling your classroom look is equally as important as Lady Gaga’s cover shot.

But, I must admit, regardless of how motivated you are to dress to impress the night before an 8 am class or all-nighter, the college lifestyle gets the best of most usual on-their-game Fashionistas. For those not-so-rare instances, we thankfully have the color black. To me, black is synonymous with Parisian sleek. It’s simple, effortless and chic. When I spotted this Fashionista early morning, I couldn’t tell if she was intentionally exuding the utmost element of class or if the one-toned outfit was an outcome of a late-night pre-lab and that, my friends is the genius behind an all-black ensemble!

So, my advice to you for not only this week, but for any morning you’re feeling a little lack-luster, is to go black and not look back. Whether it’s dark leather or noir lace, black is far from boring. Try pairing ASOS jacket and booties or skinnies and a tank. Whatever you end up choosing, your all black everything will have your lab partner thinking that you’ll be in the next September Issue.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

Yes, I know that this has probably been done a few times before but I cannot stress enough how important black blazers are to any wardrobe. Whether you’re a man or a woman, it is most definitely one of the most important items you could ever buy. And believe me when I say that there are probably over a million ways to wear this basic trend.

This Fashionista was spotted on a beautiful day and looked so put-together yet natural that I couldn’t help but approach her to compliment her gorgeous look. Like I said before there are so many different ways to sport a basic black blazer and this Fashionista took the more neutral casual look, which I happen to love. As you can see, pairing a black blazer over some basic pants and T-shirt totally adds that little bit of sophistication on those lazy days when you want an outfit pick-me-up. A nice fitted black blazer can be worn on top of almost anything and will make you look that much more refined. It’s great to wear over a loose dress or skirt to give you a little more of a polished look. In the summer, try throwing it over a romper or some jean shorts and a white tank and your outfit will look amazing and effortless. The reason I love black blazers so much is because they do so much for an outfit with minimal effort. A classic black blazer will never go out of style so you can’t go wrong.

You see so many celebrities wearing this trend all year round because it is one of those staple pieces that you will never get tired of. It wouldn’t hurt to splurge for a really well fitted blazer. I cannot explain how much every person should own a black blazer and I know those who already do own one will back me up here.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All-Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

With the New York streets filled with fashion this last week, I was really striving to find a super funky, super unique Fashionista. Inspired by the fresh new shows fashion week had to offer, I went in search of an unforgettable Fashionista. I think we can all agree that when thinking spring fashion “all-black everything” isn’t exactly one of the typical trends. However, when is an all-black ensemble ever not fashionable?  Exactly, the answer is never.

I spotted this week’s Fashionista out and about on Fourth Avenue enjoying the sinfully beautiful Tucson weather. This outfit caught my eye from a mile away as it looked like it was inpired by Sandy from Grease. I love high-waist pants, and luckily American Apparel supplies my fix. I’ve had my eyes on the Disco Pant for quite awhile now, and I highly recommend them for any Fashionista looking to sport a unique and flattering high-waist pant. For the Fashionistas not so particular to a shine, try the Unisex slim fit jeans. Fashionistas who love high-waists and wide legs simultaneously, these were made for you.

Just like this Fashionista, pair your head-to-toe black get-up with an unforgettable belt. Zara has a banging chain belt with tassel in deep green to mix up your midriff. Michael Kors also supplies an awesome chain link belt. Topping off your look with a cropped tailored blazer or add some color with a deep red blazer

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

In oh so many of my posts, I have written about the importance of a standout color. I have gabbed on and on about how color has the ability to transform an outfit and make a look effortless, while still grabbing the attention desired. Ever since I was old enough to count I have been an advocate for loud and bright colors. It is still a true testament to this day.

Yet, with that, I am still taken aback by an entirely black silhouette. And this Fashionista is the culprit.  I caught her on her way out of the Student Center heading to her internship on the Hill.  Although working on the Hill is synonymous with stuck up get-ups, this Fashionista manages to take the all-black dress code, and add her own little spin. With the weather as brisk as it is, black always seems like a must this time of year.  This Fashionista got the memo.

Keeping it simple with a pair of opaque tights, a double-pleat skirt, boots and a blazer made of jersey material, this Fashionista owns all of her black. Adding the skinny belt breaks up her silhouette, elongating the body and adding a hint of color. She even added a statement necklace, yet her jewelry choice only enhances her “all black everything” look. Even with the pops of orange, white, and gold, all of her black pieces take center stage, and I don’t hate it!

My advice to you who are looking to try this out? COMMIT to the look wholeheartedly! Besides the fact that it’s slimming, it also hits another level of sophistication. Falling back into the winter months can mean resorting back to all your black pieces – like I said, absolutely nothing wrong with that!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Style Advice of the Week

While I advocate of pretty pops of pigment, there’s nothing chicer than head-to-toe black. Fall 2011 Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter collections showed a slew of designers featuring the monochrome look on their runways. From Jean Paul Gaultier and Giambattista Valli to Christian Siriano, Lanvin and Alexander Wang, this season showed simplicity and timeless elegance. This enduring trend is sexy, dramatic and totally glamorous.

This Fashionista exudes campus chic on a stroll back from class. Her “all black everything” (shout out to Lupe Fiasco) looks fierce, fresh and awesomely edgy on a transitional fall day. She paired her lovely leather jacket with some serious lace-up utilitarian boots, luxe sweater wrap and simple leggings. Those who think the look is a little too extreme for daytime just need some assistance perfecting the trend. The key is simply mixing materials. I encourage you to try it out with pieces you already have. This Fashionista makes it work with leather, cotton and chunky knits. Need a bit of a wardrobe update for autumn? Invest in some great black separates to expand your current closet. The result is impeccably cool.

To clarify, I’m not suggesting you shun color permanently, but there’s something to be said for this chic, monochromatic look. Experiment a bit yourself for some seriously stunning ensembles.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: All Black Everything

Uncategorized

So many times I have written about how I can't stand how much black people wear in NYC and generally I stick to that but I can't help but love all the black accessories this Fashionista incorporated into her ensemble. When people do wear all black and use it as a background to highlight extraordinary or bold accessories that is something I can get on board with. Similarly, the way these black pieces become the center of the outfit without covering this Fashionista all in drab black clothing is away to wear black I definitely approve of and admire. The slightly lighter blue of the jeans and the light wash of the gray top are enough to just break up the black in her outfit without distracting from it. There is something about the way all the individual pieces come together that is so simple, seems very comfy but manages to be so chic as well.

She plays on the leather trend with great pieces without overdoing it (throw in some of the leather skirts popular right now and this would be more biker chick than city chic). The booties are so classic and perfect for any fall outfits, dressed up or down and they look great with a pair of skinny jeans like this Fashionista wears. Her black leather jacket is slender and sleek instead of bulky giving it edge but remaining feminine and perfect for layering when the weather is unpredictable and changing from hour to hour like it's been lately. The fringe on the leather cross body bag gives it some personality but the bag is small and simple enough to be worn with the jacket and not clash. The cherry on top for me are her funky sunglasses that give the outfit a fun vibe and help balance out the black leather pieces. I usually never approve of all black anything but when done right the look can be fun and edgy instead of dull and drab.
