STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Short Story

Style Advice of the Week

Most people would associate shorts with summertime, but that doesn’t always need to be the case. This Fashionista does a phenomenal job of taking a summertime trend and adapting it to winter. It's as simple as pairing shorts with a pair of tights. This Fashionista took a more conservative approach by matching the light and silky shorts with a basic black sweater and tights. Those are the key elements to winterizing this look, as long as your legs are covered and your upper body is bundled you shouldn’t have a problem staying warm. I liked this Fashionista’s approach because it’s classic and chic and would work with almost any pair of shorts, including ones that I’m sure you already have in your closet!

There are several ways that this outfit could be switched around to take a trendier spin. Patterned tights are always a fun option and by pairing them with a cute pair of shorts you allow for more of the pattern to be shown than what otherwise would have with a longer skirt. Here is an especially fun pair of peacock patterned tights made by Wolford, which just happens to be an excellent tights company.

You can also experiment with what kind of shorts you wear. Although this outfit would work with almost any pair of shorts, there are definitely more winter friendly shorts out there. Look for shorts with a thicker fabric or a darker color that will match the nature of the colder seasons. Velvet is an extremely popular fabric this season and would work wonderfully in short form. Take these beauties from Topshop for an example.

So next time you are struggling to find an outfit on a cold, blustery morning don’t forget that your favorite pair of shorts might be a great option!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Short Story

Style Advice of the Week

Spring break is now well on its way and coeds all over can’t help but dream of the warmer temperatures ahead. Sadly, after we come back to campus from the beach we realize we have a long way to go until we hit the long dog days of summer. While we patiently wait for those hot days of summer to roll around, you can rock your shorts now in the chilly months.

I spotted this Fashionista rocking an adorable pair of pastel blue shorts with a bow detail. She layered a pair of striped tights underneath her shorts to keep her warm, an off the shoulder top to show a little bit of skin, a Parisian-chic beret, stacked bracelets and moccasins to finish off her eclectic look.

Whenever I layer a pair of tights under my shorts, I always like to go with a pair of patterned tights to add more dimension to an ensemble. This leopard print tight from ASOS or this floral lace tight from Forever 21 would look fabulous underneath a pair of your go-to summer staple.

Warmer weather is slowly but surely approaching. Don’t let the colder temperatures discourage you from rocking your beloved summer pieces now!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Short Story

Style Advice of the Week

It’s hard to get into fall style when the weather is still celebrating summertime. Seen on the runways of Marc Jacobs and Isabel Marant, a simple solution to dressing up any basic outfit for class is merely the addition of a pair of nice shorts. Khaki shorts are much more sophisticated than your average denim cut-offs, and they immediately polish your look.

This Fashionista chose to pair her khaki shorts with a simple button-down, a great wardrobe staple. By leaving the shirt unbuttoned but tucked in, she has found just the right balance of structure and breezy casualness that’s perfect for a day of classes.

The beauty of dressy shorts is their versatility. The right pair can be taken from summer to fall with the simple addition of tights. There also are a variety of types available: cut, color and fabric all vary from pair to pair, so every Fashionista can find the perfect match. Urban Outfitters offers a great variety of shorts for the fall, from knits to corduroys. Just remember while shopping that these are meant to be dressy, so the length of the shorts is very important!

When shopping for fall this semester, Fashionistas, don’t think you can’t buy shorts just because summer is over! As the weather gets cooler, take a break from jeans and rock your favorite new pair of shorts to help keep your heart in the warm months of summer vacation.
