STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: A Dab Of Leather

Style Advice of the Week

The chilly autumn days that we have been experiencing on campus this October have proved one thing—leather weather is here. This time around, it’s not the usual leather biker jackets making a statement. Leather has been given an ultra feminine makeover this fall and has taken on a whole new sophisticated appeal. Both Versace and Balenciaga showed leather was their fabric of choice to create a softer edge for any style of clothing in their fall 2012 collections. Whether it's skinny pants, skirts, blouses or dresses, leather is now the perfect go-to for reviving your look from head to toe! You may think that this could be an intimidating look to flaunt this fall, especially on campus, but don’t fret Fashionistas! This season, it’s all about mixing leather with fabrics to develop a more basic and comfortable look.

Today’s Fashionista’s simple balance of leather and fabric is what caught my eye. Her knitted sweater from Zara with a splash of leather on the shoulders captivates the new feminine charm that leather has created. It livens up her plain fitted sweater and adds a sophisticated appeal—a perfect look for a day of classes. She maintains mixing leather and fabrics together with her tall, leather boots and black jeggings. The contrast of the two fabrics displays depth to her outfit, while still capturing the feminine appeal of leather.

Not only is leather’s texture elegant and edgy, it is a practical fabric to have in your closet to keep you warm this winter. Whether it’s cashmere or wool, don’t be hesitant to incorporate more leather into all fabrics of your outfit. For bottoms, pair leather pants with your favorite fall jacket. This look is good to show off when it gets cooler. If you are feeling like a night out, tuck a sheer top into a high-waisted leather skirt. The leather skirt and pants do all the work, and the mix of fabrics keeps both looks balanced and chic. For tops, try my favorite this season—the denim coat with long, leather sleeves. The unique touch of leather to this coat is edgy, feminine and the perfect addition to your closet. To set a more sophisticated tone, wear a blouse that has a touch of leather in it such as this peplum top found at Zara.

So Fashionista’s, whether it’s a small dab or much more, pair your leather with all textures and fabrics in your wardrobe. It’s all about feeling feminine in your leather this fall!
