STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Kicking Around

Style Advice of the Week

Socks with boots seem like a given, but a bohemian Fashionista will take this common assumption to the next level. Letting a pair of knee- or thigh-high socks peek out over your boots has become fall 2012’s latest look, and not only is this trend fashionable, but it’s functional also. I don’t know about your college town, but here in Harrisonburg the weather has a way of changing its mood quite often. A pair of tall boots with a set of woolen socks will keep you warm on the cooler days when tights are just a little too much.

For an elegant look try combining your favorite flowy dress with a pair of thigh-high socks and ankle booties. This is perfect for you taller girls out there and will give a little glimpse of skin, but with a touch of sophistication. However this look is also perfect for class, or a long day at the library. This Fashionista opted for the layering look and paired hers with leggings and a sweater for a casual style that still has a hint of edginess. As always there are rules for styling your favorite boot and sock combinations that are extremely important for the correct finishing touches. First of all, be mindful of your proportions—if you’re a shorter stature be sure to go for a taller boot as sometimes ankle height tends to cut you off in the wrong place. Picking the perfect shoe is also important here. The chunky grunge look, like in a great pair of combat boots, goes best paired with a neutral gray or taupe. On the other hand, a typical riding boot would go great with a dash of color, like red, for shock factor.

What do you pair your tall socks with? Next time you bundle up pick an unexpected accessory and style up your look with the perfect boot-sock combination.
