Alexander Wang, rag & bone and Balenciaga are just a few of the dozens of designers whose fall runways showcased all kinds of fabulous fur pieces. Designers brought out everything from boldly colored fur vests to more understated fur-trimmed jackets. While the bolder pieces may not fit into our everyday, this is still one runway look that can easily transition into a wearable everyday piece when done the right way.
This week’s Fashionista looks super chic in on-trend oxblood skinny jeans, a sheer patterned blouse and a cropped faux fur vest. The neutral color and simple cut of the vest are not too overwhelming, making it a versatile wardrobe piece. This Fashionista knows that one secret to making a fabulous outfit is mixing up your look with several contrasting fabrics. Pairing stretchy denim and an airy, lightweight blouse with the soft fur of the vest creates a contrast of texture that makes the outfit more interesting and appealing.
Whether you want to add a lot or a little, mixing some fur into your winter wardrobe will both keep you cozy and bump your look up from stylish to undoubtedly chic. For a more understated look like this week’s Fashionista, try this faux-fur vest from Nordstrom. The neutral browns can be paired with virtually anything. Throw it on with jeans and a long sleeve T-shirt to add flair to your daytime look, or pair it with your favorite dress for an evening look. For something a little bolder, this black and gray faux-fur vest has a more edgy, feathered look that would look great paired with black skinny jeans and a boldly colored top for a night out. If you’re ready to go all out, try this cropped faux-fur jacket from Lucky Brand Jeans. Wear it with regular or colored denim and a simple top during the day and then wear it over your outfit for the night to stay warm while still looking chic. Whichever look you try, be confident and go fur it!
As people head back to SHU after a short but sweet Thanksgiving break, students across campus are anxious to get back into the groove of college life. With only a few weeks left of the semester, students are heading back to prepare for finals while dreaming of winter break. As I headed back myself, I couldn’t help but notice this week’s Fashionista’s laid back feminine style as she loaded her car for her trip back to campus.
This week’s Fashionista rocks a casual sky blue top, paired with a simple scarf dark jeans and rustic boots. To give her outfit some flair, she also flaunts a simple braid embellished with a chic headband. I loved her sense of laid back chic style, as she dressed a simple top with delicate pieces, giving her an overall feminine look. She paired her white Michael Kors watch with a vintage vine-like bracelet, causing the green stones to pop against the watch’s white links. From her head to her toes, it was evident this student had put a lot of thought into her outfit, as she successfully attempted to play up a long sleeved tee.
But what I love most about her outfit is her choice of vintage-inspired pieces. When I think of vintage chic femininity, I can’t help but envision Oscar de La Renta’s fall 2012 collection. This particular line featured knitted shawls turtlenecks furs and tons of embellishments. Many models wore a headband with crystals as well as a pastel top, just like this week’s Fashionista! So check out Oscar de La Renta's fall runway show to channel your inner feminine side!
After a year of shooting SCAD students and their style, I think it's fair to say that photography majors are among my favorite to photograph. While they certainly can't all be grouped together in terms of style, the ones that do have an eye for fashion really stand out. There is something fascinating to me about the person hiding behind the camera being just as photograph-worthy as any of the models. I caught this student at the skate park moments after she finished a shoot for the new streetwear boutique on Broughton St. called Elev8ed.
This Fashionista keeps it simple with skinny black jeans and black lace-ups. Her floral top is updated with black accents and tied up in the front. Her hair is pulled back in a clean ponytail, which helps to show off her flashy earrings. Her classic styling is completed with bold lipstick, which reflects the color in her blouse. Her look is then given an edge with a septum ring. It's always nice to see a well-executed example of strong femininity.
If you want to achieve a similar look, the key is to incorporate floral in your outfit without being delicate. One way to shed floral of its dainty stereotype is to try darkening it up a bit. I'd recommend a pair of grey-tone floral jeans such as these from Forever 21. Pair them with a black graphic tee and complete your look with a red lip. Pull your hair out of your face and accessorize. The result will be a girly look that isn't fragile.
This isn't an accessories report, but when my path crossed this Fashionista's on Florida State's hilly campus I had to stop her. This had to be the earring of the year. Yes, one earring. I've always been a fan of bold and obnoxious jewelry. This Fashionista discovered this earring/necklace piece at our very own local Market Wednesdays. I first learned about Market Wednesdays and the great jewelry they had to offer when I was only a freshman casually browsing through the student union. Now, every week it's on my to-do list to check out and say hi to the local vendors. There are great accessories including ones from Janelle's Jewelry who has taken over my jewelry box along with my banking account.
This student was caught in front of the Collegiate Merchandising Association meeting which isn't a surprise. This girl is a motivated Fashionista and clearly knows how to dress. She holds a position as treasurer in CMA. She sports a girly, pink dress but mixes it up with an edgy vibe that the studded vest brings. To try this look you can find a similar vest here. It is like a blend between childhood and rebellion. To top off this great collaboration, this one earring is to die for. This struck my attention, how could it not? All you need is a rare piece of jewelry to make an outfit pop.

After recently browsing through my wardrobe I realized I have a very small amount of winter appropriate clothing. This Fashionista and I found this as a similarity between the two of us. She noted how she just wears her warm weather clothes with tights or a sweater over them, which I found I do as well. I feel like warm weather clothes are so much more fun, more colorful and more exciting. I started to get into long sweaters and I would wear my boots and leggings year round if I could, but I just seem to always be buying spring and summer clothes no matter what the season. I think it is the somewhat bland winter colors that I see that deter me.
This Fashionista showed me how you can choose warm weather colors to combat the winter blues. The focal point of her outfit, and my favorite part, is her almost Grecian style top. I love the puffy sleeves and its unique style. Its peach color brings you into a spring state of mind while its plunging neckline and flowing sleeves make this Anthropologie top super trendy. By layering a high waisted black skirt from Nordstrom over the top, she flaunts her tiny waistline while keeping the top from swallowing her.
She keeps the rest of her outfit simple with black tights and black wedge ankle booties from Target (obsessed!). Her jewelry was another favorite of mine: beautiful, eye-catching bracelets by Stella and Dot. I love how she pairs the gold bangles with a separate gold snake bracelet. The trend of wearing different types of bracelets, in texture and style, while staying within the same color family is a favorite of mine. She draws the eye back up to her face with sparkly gold hoop earrings.
Fashion Forecast: Keep your eyes peeled for a white hot summer! This season’s up-and-coming trend involves a white dress sure to turn heads and leave you feeling classy, confident and ready for a sizzling summer. Spring is in session here in Seattle and even though it was only 50 degrees out, the first sight of the sun brought out an array of spring attire. As I shuffled my brown Steve Madden boots to the library, I was greeted to a view of students laying out on the library green and occupying just about every table on the patio. I also ran into this Fashionista on her way to a study session in her new, lacy Urban Outfitters dress, which instantly made me envious.
If I could describe this dress to any Fashionista/o, it would simply be in one word – perfection. The details in the design of the lace looked beautiful against the white slip underneath. Since the dress was a standout piece in itself, the look called for minimal accessories and this week’s featured Fashionista nailed it with brown wedges fit for spring and a bag in the same hue. Another reason why I am such a huge fan of this outfit is because of its versatility. Clearly, this dress looks great on its own for the day, but I can also imagine it being a dress for a night out on the town if paired with the right heels and a necklace in a bold color against the white.
Celebrities these days are taking advantage of white dresses for the summer in every style including lace, silk, ruffled, high-collared, short or long. Check out Teen Vogue's feature to see how your favorite celebrities are dressing up and dressing down their favorite white frocks. If you're worried about falling behind on this rising trend, don't fret because your favorite retailers will be supporting this look well in to the summer. Feel free to check out H&M's lovely collection of white pieces here. Already on my must-have list are J.Crew's heirloom shift dress, BCBGeneration's high-low sleeveless dress and Zara's crochet dress and frilled dress.
Hint: Use the foundation of the white dress to your advantage, and support your look with bold accessories in bright colors! If you want to take your outfit up a notch, try incorporating color blocking to balance it out.
The floral epidemic spread across most campuses last spring with Fashionistas romping around town in little mini dresses and loose fitting shirts. The prints were luscious and made any passerby dream of summer break. Summer naturally brought in some floral prints here and there, but it wasn't until recently that I noticed the surge of floral making it's way back into students' fall wardrobes. This time the prints are more subdued, the silhouettes are a bit more conservative and the color black is prevalent in most ensembles. This Fashionista took to the mixology by pairing a floral dress with sheer, gothic foliage tights.
My advice this week is to emulate today's Fashionista and wear your deeper hued florals print pieces. And take note of her tights and the run- there's no need to toss out your stockings anymore! And have a great Labor Day!
Life is, no doubt, happy in the Valley as we all settle in for the fall and with the promise of syllabus week on the horizon, the Penn State night life will soon be back in full swing. As your getting ready to step out for the night be sure to leave a lasting impression by looking chic from head to toe with this seasons hottest shoes and hair accessories.

I hadn’t given much thought to the idea of nautical stripes as a major trend for fall. That is, I hadn’t until I saw them featured on Alexa Chung’s “Must Haves for Fall” list in the September issue of Marie Claire. Chung, whose across-the-pond it girl style has recently been raved about by stylists and Fashionistas alike, gives the once-Springy trend new life by adding chunky, feminine layers and accessories. She claim’s that
Trendy scarves can dress up any outfit. Whether you are trying to glam up a t-shirt and jeans, or play down a breezy frock, a scarf can do just that for you. Be careful, however, when looking for a scarf. Subtler scarves are better than eccentric scarves, because they can complement more outfits. Minimal color and a solid pattern is key. Urban Outfitters has an ideal scarf for every Fashionistas wardrobe. Also check out American Apparel’s super sheer circle scarf that comes in an array of neutral hues!
