STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Let It Ride

Style Advice of the Week

I’ve always wanted to be a horseback rider. Though I must admit, it was never because of the sport and it had more to do with the clothes than anything else. There is something so ostensibly-chic that I begged my father for lessons despite my aversion to the outdoors. Alas, he saw right through me and declined but since then I have held a strong inclination for anything riding boots and blazers. Nothing makes me happier when these trends roll back into the spotlight, so when designers decided that equestrian was back for the season, I was ecstatic.

This Fashionista initially caught my eye because of the way she pulled off the equestrian trend. Her amazing boots were of course what pulled me in. This Fashionista is wearing boots from Tory Burch which are a great Christmas wish present.  But for a more realistic alternative DSW has a great variety and these two are my top picks. Riding boots can give an amazing Americana vibe to any pants, skirts or dresses.  Fashion houses such as Givenchy and Tommy Hilfiger have determined that riding boots are this season’s must have.

To further make me geek out over this Fashionista’s outfit, I am obsessed with the way she color blocked. By sticking to the same spectrum of the color wheel, Monica paired gold and blue with neutrals, which is a great first step if you do not feel prepared for color blocking.  Try it out with a top like this one for a touch of quirk.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK:1950s Holiday

Style Advice of the Week

As the weather gets cooler and holidays loom, there have been an increasing number of festive coats out on campus. Michelle, a native Texan, shows us how to stay chic amidst holiday pitfalls, such as the infamous ugly Christmas sweater that everyone loves to hate. Michelle’s coat was purchased at Topshop, but similar styles with a classically straight fit and toggle fastenings can be purchased at J.Crew or Burberry. A coat like this can be worn year in and year out, so consider it a worthwhile investment. The coat also has a plaid print on the inside, which incorporates a holiday vibe. Winter weather also provides a reason for novelty socks, so when wearing shoes such as loafers or ballet flats, take the opportunity to discretely showcase your favorite patterns.

Maroon cords have been trending this last season, and December will be no exception as we transition into the official winter months. As this Fashionista exhibits here, the maroon color not only works well with the navy coat, but also the patent leather loafers. Michelle has put a fun spin on her ensemble by incorporating accessories inspired by the 1950s, namely the traditionally shaped loafers, the geometric glasses and the plaid detail of the coat. If you are planning on attending any holiday parties in the coming weeks, try dressing up jewel-toned cords as a welcomed change in the little black dress routine. And although you could definitely wear a classic overcoat like this in any occasion, bring in some additional holiday spirit in the evening with a stack of bangles at your wrist, or multiple strands of pearls around your neck for a less common, yet equally festive look.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Workplace Wonders

Style Advice of the Week

As some college students begin to enter the real world tackling new internships or part time jobs, our inner Fashionista may question what is appropriate for the workplace. The hardest part of this may be deciphering what is appropriate yet fashionable as opposed to just plain boring. The good news is that a fall day offers layering and longer hemlines as options to look the part while staying true to our inner Fashionista. If you're still unsure of what to wear, then check out this week's featured Fashionista!

This week’s Fashionista was coincidentally on her way back from student teaching when I found her. Her professional outfit caught my eye, as the colors and textures compliment one another to give her an overall radiant look. Her play on nude hues gives her a classic feel, while her metallic silver ballet flats polish off her feminine look. She also flaunts a rose gold Michael Kors watch, matching perfectly with her color choices. My favorite part of this look is her subtle polka-dot printed pants. The soft colors make these pants a statement piece, as the dots are small and dainty, rather than contrasting and large as most polka-dots are, giving her a pop to her relatively calm outfit.

Helpful hints for the workplace would be to pick office appropriate hemlines and necklines while giving your outfit your own personal twist. Choosing a great color pallet or incorporating this season’s hottest accessories, such as a cute cross-body or burgundy pumps, are a great way to make work attire fun! A pencil skirt is also a great statement piece for the office, making sure the hemline grazes the top of your knee. For some more office inspiration, check out Tory Burch’s fall 2012 runway as she incorporates longer hemlines with fashionable neutral colors, eye-catching patterns and fun textures!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Geek Chic

Style Advice of the Week

I'm always impressed with this fashion marketing student's ability to come to class looking cool. She walks into the fashion building with her hair thrown up in a casual bun and studious tortoise shell frames in place, ready to learn about trend forecasting. Her look is the perfect mix of academia and style.

Her black leggings and blue TOMS are the epitomy of comfort, with a hint of philanthropy. She wears a weather-appropriate denim shirt, perfect for going from humid Savannah outdoors to the air conditioned halls of Eckburg Hall. Underneath her denim shirt, she wears a unique crocheted violet top with pink underneath. Interestingly enough, this outfit is very similar to one worn by a fashion marketing student spring quarter, and coincidentally the two Fashionistas share the same first name.

Since this Fashionista consistently rocks this look, it probably doesn't take her very long to get ready, which is always an advantage. Want to master this look and routinely walk into class looking intelligent and fashionable? Invest in a solid pair of leggings, such as these from American Apparel. Get used to twisting your hair up into a bun and keeping the focus on your face and glasses. Glasses don't have to be expensive, you can do what this Fashionista did and pick out a $10 pair from Urban Outfitters. Go thrifting for that perfect denim button-down, and don't be afraid to take risks with what you wear underneath since it's only peaking out. Complete your look with a relaxed attitude.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Business in the Back, Party in the Front

Style Advice of the Week

Waterfall hem. High-low. Mullet skirt. Asymmetrical hem. This trend has many names, and for good reason; there are many different ways to show it off. This design first came on the scene in the 1870s, and has made sporadic reappearances since then. But in fall of 2011, this trend really hit its stride. It has been a year since high-low skirts debuted on runways, and for a distinct trend like this, that is a long time. Although the “mullet skirt” may not be here to stay, there’s no reason you can’t have a little fun while it’s here.

Some of you may be wondering, how can I make such a distinct item a part of my everyday wardrobe? Well, just like many other trends, it’s all about how you want to wear it. Because of the popularity of this trend there are now many different types of high-low skirts and dresses. You could have a dressed down version made of jersey, like this one from BCBG. Or even something along the lines of formal wear, like the ones made by Jessica McClintock. Once you decide what context to wear it in, use your own person style to chose your particular dress. If you want something tough, add another trend, like cutouts, like this one from Urban Outfitters. Or keep it sweet and neutral with lace, like this dress from Forever 21

This Fashionista has a lovely simple dress that really lets the hemline be the accent and offsets it with personal accessories.  The overlay of the skirt adds a unique detail, similar to a petal skirt.  The belt adds a waist, which can often be lost in dresses with this hemline.  And lastly she added a couple pieces of special silver jewelry to pay homage to her Irish heritage.

So get out there and try this trend before it gets too rainy outside! Never be too afraid to add your own personal flair, whether it’s a vibrant color, or a beautiful detail.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Classic in the city

Style Advice of the Week

My summer travels took me to the big city where I was enthralled by a variety of cultures and of course, styles. Much different than Tallahassee where a few trends float around, there was no rules when it came to fashion. Anything from hipster to preppy is sported. My eyes got exposed to the best and the worst ensembles. Ana's costume was one of most excellent.

Ana collaborates her outfit with multiple textures. You would think that usually wouldn't work, but here it is perfection. With her tweed jacket known to have been made popular by Chanel, and is still seen on their runway collections today, and the adorable flower bottoms give it a girly touch. The precious shorts are making us realize this girl isn't just all business. Her simplistic white button down finishes this classy outfit by pulling it all together. She is ready to rock it at her internship!

How to do classic: Simple, Simple, Simple. Keep it simple and throw on a Chanel–inspired jacket for the preppy look. Classic pieces like ballet flats and a traditional doctor bag makes you professional and ready to go wherever your headed whether an interview or lunch.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Fab Fedora

Style Advice of the Week

If you don’t own a fedora, I don’t blame you. Sometimes it is hard to find the perfect outfit to rock with your styling hat, and not to mention you don’t want to be the talk of passer-bys for all the wrong reasons. There is definitely a proper way to incorporate the trend into your outfit, and there is definitely an incorrect way. The week’s Fashionista arguably knows the correct way and definitely caught my eye and got my stamp of approval.

The first thing you notice when looking at this week’s Fashionista is beige and black fedora. It is the perfect complement for her crisp ensemble.  Once over the initial stun of stylishness, the nest thing to take note of is her uncanny ability to mix and match accessories which essentially “make” the outfit; without the accessories (fedora, scarf, belt, sandals, side purse) this outfit, while fabulous, would blend in with the rest.

With that said, a fedora is a piece around which you must style your outfit. In other words it is one of those stand-out pieces that you must use as the foundation of your outfit and plan according to what works with it. Otherwise you will end up with an outfit that does not tie up all the loose ends.

This week’s Fashionista pairs the look with all the right things: a classic dark denim short, colorful scarf, crisp white top and sandals to die for, this Fashionista can’t go wrong. Not only is this she summer ready but she is ready in style.

Do you want to recreate this look? Try laying the groundwork for your fabulous ensemble with this fedora from Volcom – it is simple yet has some flare of its own. Moving from there,  these Joe’s cuffed denim shorts from Nordstrom paired with this eyelet tee from LOFT complement the hat, and help create a backdrop for accessory heaven. So, now make the outfit your own with your choice of accessories. Try a simple braided belt like this, a fabulously colorful scarf like one of these from Lilly Pullitzer, and top it all off with eye catching sandals to add some pop and rad summer stunna shades to block the rays.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Bralets

Style Advice of the Week

Every year as spring semester comes to an end, my sorority holds a casual ceremony for all the graduating seniors where they can will away any sorority items they have gotten over the years to the younger sisters. It has basically become an excuse to all dress up, take pictures and have brunch at one of our favorite restaurants on the water. Knowing this, I assumed it would be a great place to gather blog material and I was right. Pleated maxi skirts, high low skirts, maxi dresses, neons and florals seemed to be the overall consensus. But I chose this week's Fashionista not only because she stood out from the crowd, but because she was wearing a summer trend that I have been dying to try: the bralet top.

The bralet top got a lot of press a few week's ago at Coachella, and I hope it continues to do so. This week's Fashionista is wearing an Urban Outfitters bralet top and shorts, a Michael Kors watch and Steve Madden wedges. Although her choice of black and floral pattern was definitely more fitting for the occasion, I am a huge fan of bold prints and designs on bralet tops. Mara Hoffman, who is known for her bold and exotic prints, makes an amazing embroidered bustier top or Nasty Gal carries a neon Aztec printed crop top with a caged back. If you do prefer a more demur style, Topshop has a great cut out bralet with a subtle swan print.

Don't think of the bralet as a top that requires you to show your whole midriff. I'm not suggesting you walk out of the house looking like Britney Spears circa 2003. Bralets can show the perfect grown up amount of midriff when paired with a high waisted maxi skirt or high waisted trousers.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Waterproof Street Style

Style Advice of the Week

Some people shudder at the thought of a rainy day; hair becomes ultra frizzy and your mascara can start to run. Also, waterproofing your outfit can get intimidating. We all have that day when we have the perfect outfit picked out and then it rains so we resort to throwing on a garbage bag over our attire. Okay, that is a major exaggeration, but you get what I mean. Nobody likes to let a rainy day get in the way of fashion, and this Fashionista certainly didn’t let the weather rain on her parade.

I say, why not take advantage of the rain and wear your brightest colors? Nothing screams contrast more than a dreary day and bright colors. This Fashionista took advantage of the weather by most importantly carrying an umbrella. I would argue that an umbrella is one of the most forgotten accessories to an outfit because you can’t carry them as often as your handbag, so when the opportunity arises, grab one; classic American designer Lilly Pulitzer has excellent girly printed umbrellas. The light pink with leopard patterned accents is one this Fashionista uses to avoid the rain in along with a pair of bright yellow Hunter Boots. Colored rain boots are another great item to have in your closet if you're going to be walking outside a lot, plus, they give you every reason to avoid huge puddles. Also, take note that this Fashionista matches her pink silk T-shirt with her leopard pink umbrella, showing off a fun color combination. If dark hues are your favorite, try to go outside of your element by wearing an outfit full of color one day just like this Fashionista does.

Another great way to exhibit your fearless street style is by mixing prints. This Fashionista’s look is full of fashion “do’s.” Besides the fun color choice, she also mixed a floral print scarf with the leopard print umbrella while still managing to keep her look from being too loud. To replicate this look, choose accessories with prints on them and keep the actual clothes solid colors. Finally, a jean jacket is a great item to have in your closet because it looks great with bright or neutral colors and I would even go as far to say that they look great with dark jeans like on this Fashionista. Madewell's Goldrush jacket is hard to go wrong with.

Don’t be afraid to be bold when it comes to colors, especially on a rainy day because it can also be a great mood lifter. After catching this Fashionista, I wanted to skip all the way to class singing in the rain and I didn’t even have a cute umbrella to protect my outfit with!

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Love Thy Scarf

Uncategorized

Loose basic top, plain white jeans, nude ballet flats, and a beige sling bag- why not beat the humdrum of life by adding pizazz to a monotonous outfit? Today’s inspiring Fashionista opted to punctuate her outfit with a lightweight yellow green printed scarf. Not only did the accessory brighten up her whole look, but also made her ensemble stylishly cozy.

Even during the “ber” months the country’s weather decides to be erratic. In any case, scarves at this time should come in handy. Practical and an of-the-moment accessory it can elevate any outfit without having to put too much effort. This woven scarf with all over leopard print adds character to an all black outfit. For those that appreciate a more classic look, a basic black scarf is a must to be added to your scarf collection. What’s best about a scarf is that it doesn’t cost a whole week’s allowance. Buying a lot won’t hurt, unless it’s signature brand.

What you can add to your leopard printed scarf is this lightweight black skull leaf print scarf , again from Topshop. This scarf can be used for warm weather and even as an accessory to tie around the strap of your handbag, a hair tie, or a head wrap. With a fashionably brilliant mind, a scarf can be your ensemble’s best friend.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Add a Little Country Flair

Uncategorized

Whoever said "don't wear white after labor day" does not know what they are talking about. White is an essential in my wardrobe. It looks great with everything, looks clean and chic, and can be paired with all patterns and colors. Going to school in the South means beautiful weather long into fall, so dresses are also an essential daytime clothing item. This Fashionista looks super cute in this white eyelet dress from Urban Outfitters. She adds a little country flair with a brown braided belt from Nordstroms. I love how the skinny belt flaunts her waistline and the length of the dress is perfect for keeping it classy. I love how simple this dress is, but the shoes add a funky, trendy twist. Her Steve Madden sandals are a comfortable, practical choice for walking around the hilly campus of JMU. For some more country flair, add some cute cowboy boots!

For some more cute eyelet dresses, Free People has some awesome choices. White eyelet dresses not only have a country feel, but sort of a peasant feel too. Free People’s dresses are so carefree and perfect for the daytime. Another thing I thought was trendy of this Fashionista is her super cool, unique hair. Her deep red hue is highlighted in bright red highlights. To top off all that red, she rocks some hair glitter in shiny red. This is a trend not many people can pull off, but this Fashionista looks amazing in this shade. It is sort of a twist on the colored ends that blondes have been rocking these days, and this Fashionista pulls off this trend with flying colors.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Spring Time Sweetness

All About Beauty

Last week, we were graced with perfect spring weather just in time for our spring break! It was almost as if the sun had decided to show up once winter quarter was finally over. The end of finals brought out shorts without tights layered underneath, pretty floral dresses and short-sleeved T-shirts without the need for jacket cover-ups! The students of Seattle University had undergone a total transformation and outfits from Fashionista/os alike were bursting with spring trends. This week’s Fashionista ditched any traces of a harsh winter in Seattle by creating an outfit that revolved around her adorable floral jumper. To compliment the rest of the outfit, she threw on a forest green cardigan, a thick brown suede belt and strappy black sandals. Typically, we correlate spring with dresses, skirts and the recently popular romper, however, it is the jumper that is clearly being overlooked. I am absolutely loving how this jumper blends in so beautifully with the varying textures and colors. Another aspect of the outfit that I found impressive was the way that this Fashionista decided to style her belt. Instead of looping it through the buckle like anyone normally would, she decided to tuck the excess suede behind the belt itself to let it sit comfortably without any fuss at all.

This season, step outside of your fashionable comfort zone and test drive a jumper in spring's hottest styles! My favorites include Urban Outfitters' kimchi blue silky printed jumper, BCBGeneration's greyhound racerback romper and American Apparel's mélange jersey pocket romper. They are perfect for any spring or summer day and easy to toss on if you're ever in an outfit rut since choosing a one piece is much more simpler than picking out two separate pieces.

Hint: Looking for new ways to style your belt? Get inspired by this week's featured Fashionista and experiment with ways to loop your belt, various height levels on your waist, and even doubling up with two belts to an outfit.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Farmer Fresh

From the Editor

A couple weeks ago I wrote about my love for overalls in my Concert Mania Style Advice of the Week post. I had mentioned all the fun things about wearing overalls and the nostaglic feeling we get. But I completely left out the one of the best parts of these fashions: of how versatile they can be in your wardrobe and, as a college fashion Web site, we are always looking to give you tips on ways to expand the usage of the pieces in our wardrobe.

It was this Fashionista who reminded me how cool the un-hooked look of overalls is and how they can essentially act as a pair of basic denim in your ensemble. From a distance, today's Fashionista appeared to be wearing an extra high pair of skinny denim, but in fact, as I got closer to her, I realized her pants were definitely overalls.

So if you find yourself upset with your impulse overall purchase, fear no more. Throw down the straps and utilize the pants as you would any pair of denim. The lowered straps simply add that unique factor to your outfit and everyone is always looking for that extra unique touch.

STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Romp It Out!

Uncategorized

For summer barbecues, one of the main objectives can be just to keep cool. Whether it's a family gathering or a big cookout with friends, barbecues can be large events that last for hours. Between the number of people in attendance and the burning grills,  barbecues can mean lots and lots of heat!

One of the best and easiest ways to beat the heat is to ditch the jeans and wear a romper. Jeans can be constricting, and no one likes to be uncomfortable on a hot day. Rompers come in lots of different styles and you can easliy find a pair that suits you.

If you're really attached to your jeans you can try this denim romper to get your daily denim fix, or you can be more flirty and fun with this asymmetrical floral romper. Another great choice is this casual graphic romper. You can stay cool and still express your individuality. My personal favorite choice is this silk cami romper, because it's semi-casual and has a lot more versatility. There are so many different situations where it would be appropriate.

Rompers (and jumpsuits) can be great choices for almost any situation. The different styles mean that you can always find one that suits the occasion, whether it be a day at the beach, or a night out on the town with your girls. Just choose the style that you're most comfortable with and go crazy.

Hint: Another great thing about rompers is that they transition really well from day to night. If after the big barbecue you want to go out clubbing with your girls, you can easily throw on a great pair of pumps and a boyfriend blazer and get to dancing! Or you try this great satin romper and ditch the jacket altogether!

If you buy just one accessory this fall, make it a statement necklace. Whether you choose a bib, jeweled, or beaded style, all are huge for summer and fall and will add a seriously stylish boost to any outfit!

Our favorites? Ones from chain Forever21. The online stock is constantly updated and filled with tons of of-the-moment, affordable options. We especially like these black choices…chic with a white tank and shorts now as well as with a black blazer and jeans in the fall.
