STYLE GURU STYLE: Working Girl

The Topshop Unique fall 2015 collection debuted a modern twist on traditional working attire. What spoke to me was the use of different textures within one look. Some highlights were the utilization of patterns in neutrals and fusing spring and winter trends together. This show proved that you don’t have to be boring just because you are going to work.

For my interpretation, I wanted to send the same message as Topshop to a different audience. I wanted to prove that going to school is just as important as going to work. To achieve this, I found a middle ground. I believe college is considered work and should be taken seriously. In contrast, 8 am classes are no picnic, and sitting there in a stuffy blazer and slacks is nobody’s idea of a good time.

So, in this look I took parts of the Topshop look and made them college friendly. To make it more day-to-day appropriate, I started by subbing out the turtleneck for a chunky scarf. Chunky scarves are essential for any New York winter. Yet, they also serve as a nice statement piece when needed. Why wear one versus a turtleneck? The removable factor for those hectic school days should not be underestimated. In the Topshop show, the model is wearing a patterned blazer over her turtleneck. I paired my scarf with a thick plaid shirt because it is an essential layering piece in any college wardrobe. It is much cheaper than a blazer and, most importantly, a collared shirt adds a formal polish to what would normally be a shirt and leggings. Since I was not wearing a turtleneck, I chose an oversized T-shirt that fell to my mid-thigh. Regardless of what look you are trying to accomplish, always make sure your top falls to at least your hip area when wearing leggings.

Runway shows are sometimes daunting; designers are given hefty budgets to make their dream a reality. Just because what you are seeing is glitzy and glamorous does not mean it can’t be your reality, too!
