The spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection by alice + olivia was both “preppy and pretty” as described by designer Stacey Bendet. I’ve always loved the brand’s beautiful flirty dresses for which it’s known, but this collection was full of everyday looks, perfect for summer. I was blown away by the use of lace, embellishments and prints to put a fresh spin on popular spring silhouettes. Though what really stood out to me was the line’s monochromatic looks. In the fall and winter I often find myself wearing an entirely black ensemble. The few all white outfits shown in the collection however, inspired me to try something different for summer. I sometimes feel that I need a pop of color or pattern when wearing a neutral color, but these looks proved that monochrome can be just as eye-catching.
I took both the monochrome trend and the reoccurring crop top and skirt silhouettes from the alice + olivia collection and created a look of my own. I paired a cowl neck crop top with an A-line mini skirt then added nude heels, a structured white purse and gold earrings to create a polished and dressy look. This could be worn out to dinner, on a date or to any summer party. For a more casual adaptation, try swapping shorts for the skirt and a pair of classic white Keds.
If you’re like me and always find yourself gravitating towards the black in your closet or if an outfit feels incomplete without a pattern, it’s time to switch it up. Whether you choose all white or another summery neutral shade, monochrome is one of the easiest styles to pull off. I’m looking forward to trying out variations of this trend and you should too!
