STYLE GURU STYLE: Velvet Musings

Over the past year of fashion, one of my favorite fabrics, velvet, has made appearances on the runways from designers like Givenchy, Topshop Unique, Sonia Rykiel and Valentino. I love velvet because it is such a rich fabric that adds this dark, kind of sexy feel to any piece of clothing. Velvet feels and looks so vintage and is definitely a fabric for any time period. It makes a dress or shirt go from day-to-night effortlessly, and has reinvented classic silhouettes like the pant suit from the Topshop Unique resort 2016 collection.

Making something simple like a turtleneck dress in a fabric like velvet adds something special and unique to that seemingly plain shape. What I love about this dress is not only the velvet, but the striped design gives it a little extra pop of uniqueness. Even though my dress is a vintage piece I got from a consignment store (thank you thrift gods!), it is still pretty on trend with the velvet styles that are popular right now. I wanted a ’90s grunge look, so I paired my dress with a oversized, black blazer that I consider one of the most important staples in any Fashionista’s wardrobe. I paired this look with a pair of patent leather Dr. Martens sandals and socks because even though it is 65 degrees here in South Carolina, I refuse to be the person with her toes out in January. To finish off my look, I paired my favorite black, leather bag and a simple arrowhead style necklace. I didn’t want to add too much to my outfit considering I am wearing a striped, maroon, velvet dress.

Get My Look: 1. A crushed velvet dress. 2. Chunky sandals. 3. A staple jacket.
