STYLE GURU STYLE: Urban Vintage

The running joke among me and my Fashionista friends when we find something fierce is “it’d look better in black.”  As a necessary and basic color element, black provides us with the perfect canvas to keep simple or jazz right up.  In Alexander Wang’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear line, black is the guest of honor. United by the central theme of black, Wang makes nods and shoutouts to a milieu of subcultures and icons, from eastern Japanese Lolitas to hair metal bands of the 1980s. Wang uses a variety of texturally interesting materials, from leather to velvet to denim, to paint for his audience fashion history and inspiration in shades of black.

Black, vintage and history are all things I enjoy, thus my attraction to this runway show was inevitable. Personally, I felt inspired by the visible textural nuances and the visual excitement of varying hemlines. To keep the shapes simple but the details interesting, I chose to emulate this attitude by choosing an embroidered dark green dress with black tights. Inspired by Wang’s hardware and intricate ball-and-chain accessories, I chose to both play up the vintage aspect and the softer side with a distressed pearl necklace. Due to my unfortunate lack of black boots, I grounded this look with my favorite black pointed flats, but as Wang seems to favor in his show, this look would also be complete with a good pair of Dr. Martens.

Get My Look: 1. Dark, simple dress.  2.  Black tights.   3.  Distressed necklace.
