STYLE GURU STYLE: Twist and Shout

Congratulations on finishing another semester, my fashionable friends! While this time of year is full of amazing things (such as saying goodbye to exams and saying hello to days by the pool), the end of this particular semester is bittersweet for me as I say goodbye to college and hello to the real world.

My four years in New York City have had a dramatic effect on my studies, my career aspirations and, of course, my wardrobe. Riding boots have given way to ankle boots; bright colors have given way to muted tones, and my low-rise dELiA*s jeans from high school (may they rest in peace) have been banished as I’ve slowly reshaped my closet and my attitude to city life. For my final article as a Style Guru, I wanted a look that captured this style transformation and that would serve as a time capsule for the inevitable changes to come.

I took my inspiration for this look from the Joseph spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. I was particularly drawn to the collection’s combination of loose, summer-ready draping with sleek, tailored menswear-inspired pieces: I’ve paired a crisp white shirt from Zara with a pair of black linen shorts in reference to this particular monochromatic ensemble. Several of the looks in the collection are characterized by twisted and knotted fabric, so I chose a shirt that had a similar dose of unexpected dimension.

In keeping with the fresh white kicks paired with every look in the collection, I’m sporting my go-to pair of Stan Smiths—which are regrettably neither as fresh nor as white as they once were due to my obsessive sneaker wearing. I’ve chosen to go jewelry and accessory free to maintain the collection’s minimalist aesthetic, but I couldn’t resist adding my favorite pair of mirrored sunglasses as a nod to summer’s imminent arrival. I’m excited to add this easy-breezy, yet still polished, ensemble to my wardrobe rotation when temperatures heat up.

Unfortunately, saying goodbye to college also means saying goodbye to CollegeFashionista. And while I’m sad to leave this amazing community, I’m excited to see what all you lovely Style Gurus do, write and wear next. Thanks for reading—it’s been RAD.
