STYLE GURU STYLE: Traditional Concepts, Bold Choices

Fall and winter are two of my favorite fashion seasons. They’re the seasons I can wear my black patent leather Dr. Martens boots, a pair of leggings and throw on an oversized sweater to call it a day. Not only that, but my obsession with dark lipstick colors can shine during those cool and crisp months. But if there’s one thing I’ve struggled with, it’s transitioning my dark and edgy style into the warmer seasons and making it a bit more sophisticated.

With the help of Madewell’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection, I was finally able to pull some inspiration. Somsack Sikhounmuong, Madewell’s head designer, successfully created a well-balanced collection of schoolgirl influenced plaid getups paralleled with oversized denim and edgy leather jackets. And don’t forget the beautiful knit wear and peacoats!

The great part of putting this look together is that every article of clothing is something I’ve owned for more than three years, with the exception of the shoes, just never worn together! I am not a jeans girl. All of my friends are absolutely shocked when I wear a pair of denim. But at a certain point it’s time to be a big girl and put your big girl pants on! Madewell’s platform is all about rocking denim and this look would not be complete without it. Luckily American Eagle Outfitters makes the comfiest pairs of jeans that are always my go-tos.

About five years ago, I walked into American Apparel and came across this graphic T-shirt that I knew I had to have. It was probably the first article of clothing I bought that kickstarted my grungier taste in fashion. I’m still not sure what is on it, possibly a black and white mirrored face or maybe just a bunch of shapes, but I love it. There’s something very artistic about it that just makes things more fun!

I’ve mentioned in previous posts that a denim jacket is a must-have in a woman’s closet, but a leather jacket is a close second. Whether layered with a pair of blue or black denim or a dress, they’re just fun! Also, who doesn’t want an overly worn plaid flannel in their closet? They are easily one of the most comfortable things I own. It’s also perfect to keep around your waist in case it gets too hot and the jacket has to come off.

Get My Look: 1. Dark wash jeans. 2. Graphic T-shirt. 3. Leather jacket. 4. A pair of ankle boots.
