STYLE GURU STYLE: Tough Florals

Imagine a spring day. You are strolling past a garden full of blooming flowers, and how do those flowers smell? Well, sweet! When it comes to fashion, the floral pattern is typically considered sweet, innocent, prim, etc. Floral is almost a cliché now; it can be boring until you toughen it up and make it edgy.

Saint Laurent’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection did just that. In the show, floral patterns were joined with leather, sequins, leopard print and cool-girl attitude. Therefore, I decided to mix two of the trends found in the show, leather and floral, in this look.

I started with a ‘90s floral pencil skirt that I bought at a vintage shop. I love the big, vibrant nature of the floral pattern. I paired it with a blue Madewell T-shirt that has a slit up the back. I liked the juxtaposition of the looseness of the top with the slimness of the skirt. A pair of Birkenstocks relaxed the look. I added some silver jewelry, such as this beautiful Alex and Ani Hand of Fatima necklace that I have been wearing nonstop since I got it, and a couple of silver rings. To play off of the purple colors in the skirt’s floral print, I added a berry-colored lipstick. To me, a look is never complete without some color on my lips!

The toughness of the outfit came from the leather jacket. This one is a bit big, since I borrowed it from my mom, but it still did the job of making the floral a bit more intimidating and unexpected. Plus, I recently dyed my hair darker, and I thought maybe that added to the edgy vibe.

Get My Look: 1. A leather jacket. 2. A floral skirt. 3. A pair of sandals. 4. A loose T-shirt. 5. A fearless attitude!
