STYLE GURU STYLE: They’re Bringing Chokers Back, Yeah?

When I saw chokers returning on the runway, I didn’t know what to think. In my head I was thinking, “Oh no, why would the fashion world do this to us?” Images of mom jeans, white sneakers and the ’90s flashed through my head. I couldn’t imagine one of my least favorite jewelry trends coming back to haunt me. However, I have to say I love how this trend is being modernized. There’s no more plastic stretchy chokers; they’re now statement pieces that really tie an outfit together. They can turn a simple outfit elegant, with a little bit of a grunge.

From lace to beads, velvets and gems, there’s definitely a choker out there for you. One of my favorite looks with this trend is turning long-strand necklaces into two strands. As you can see with my look, I took my long, crystal necklace from Nordstrom and twisted it around, making a choker with an extra strand. I think you can get away with layering necklaces with a choker as long as they match. For example, if you’re wearing a gold choker, match it with a longer gold necklace if you decide to layer. I think this keeps things from becoming too overwhelming. I recommend investing in a neutral choker (like black or gold) so you have one that can be worn with anything. My collection is small, consisting of only three chokers, but I know it’s going to grow this fall.

On a cool autumn day, all I need is an outfit like this with my cardigan in hand. I wore my necklace with my favorite army green silk top, black leggings and black leather booties. I’m not sure how long chokers will be around to stay, but they’re welcome in my jewelry box for as long as they want!
