A few weeks ago, I caught myself stealing one of my boyfriend’s V-necks—again. I’ve been moving every couple of months and didn’t have any comfortable clothing with me, resulting in the theft of his T-shirts and running shorts. I thought it was more important to fill my suitcase with trendy pieces for the summer, but soon found myself missing that sweet feeling of a poly-cotton blend on my skin.
I went out and bought some basics, but rarely wore them because they felt so unsophisticated and standard—so basic! So, like many Fashionista/os before me, I turned to the runway to find inspiration. I stumbled upon A.W.A.K.E.’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear line. The line’s blazers, A-line dresses and pencil skirts created a look that was simple and classy. There was a lot of color-blocking, but each outfit had one item with a rooster print on it that gave the simple look a quirky twist that definitely wasn’t basic.
For my outfit today, I chose a gray cotton V-neck. I sadly don’t own anything with a rooster print so I wore it over a floral patterned romper. I knotted my shirt in order to highlight my romper’s cinched waistline. My sparkly jelly sandals and a long necklace with a sparkly pendant on the end spiced up my look. The printed shorts added a pop of color and the sparkles added a pop of sass to what could have been a boring outfit. The contrast between simple and shiny makes my outfit a little edgier and unique.
Wardrobe staples like a cotton T-shirt can be the building blocks to a great outfit. Take a page out of A.W.A.K.E.’s book and make your simple look trendy with one standout print. Then, take a page out of my book and add a little sparkle because a day in the comfort of cotton shouldn’t have to feel basic.
