As good as the sun feels, there is nothing I love more than a good third layer piece. Jackets are my best friend, especially in my internship office. Even if it’s 85-degrees, outside the office will be a brisk 65 with no exceptions. Thankfully, this past season has given Fashionistas tons of options, and I’m all about the varsity jacket style. I fell especially in love with the pieces from the Anna Sui resort 2015 collection, and she gave us everything from kimonos to track jackets. It will be easy to find something to cover up with.
The collection is a combination of rich muted jewel tones and neutrals. While I would love to rock a deep cobalt jacket, I had to stay true to my love for neutral monochrome. Sui’s looks also sported prints on most of the pieces, so in keeping with her theme, I wore my black and white checkered pleated skirt I thrifted a while back; the pleats add a feminine flair to the otherwise androgynous look. It reminds me a little bit of a tennis skirt so I figured if I’m going to be sporty, I might as well go all out!
While I might not be training for the Wimbledon any time soon, varsity jackets are a great way to add a little spice to your usual wardrobe. Any style from girly to punk can pull off a look like this and that is the sheer beauty of it. A lace top and heels would contrast spectacularly with the jersey knit fabric of the sleeves, but a pair of Converse and a graphic T-shirt are a natural pairing for a movie date. Next time you get goosebumps at your desk, forget about the denim jacket and reach for something a bit unexpected. After all, a little athleticism never hurt anyone.
