STYLE GURU STYLE: The Unrefined Silhouette

This month’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear show from 3.1 Phillip Lim was the epitome of cool. The collection contained tailored pieces that had a roughness to them. Lim played with the silhouette by adding dangling straps, loose scarves and distinct cuts. Instead of every look being perfectly symmetrical and put together, they were raw and ready for someone who wishes to break the mold. I absolutely loved the style and feeling of this collection. The person wearing these clothes is confident and ready to take on the world. My goal was to put together a look that I felt encompassed that same tough attitude.

As a student, my number one priority is feeling comfortable during a day filled with long lectures all over campus. That is why I strived to maintain the feel of the collection but channel it into a streetwear look.

The main colors throughout the 3.1 Phillip Lim show were blacks, army greens, grays and darker shades of reds. I kept my outfit almost entirely black with the only source of color being my green coat and red head wrap. I wore a black turtleneck sweater underneath a black oversized T-shirt. This layer not only provided much needed warmth but the baggy collar and loose shirt created an unrefined silhouette. The loose look on top is contrasted with my black skinny jeans. The visual juxtaposition between a baggy shirt and tight pants are one of my favorite ways to play with shape in an outfit. It may not be the most flattering, but I guarantee it is extremely comfortable.

The gorgeous heels from the runway would simply not work on a campus full of hills. However, I managed to maintain some height by wearing a black pair of platforms that make the look even edgier. I rolled my jeans up a little bit to really emphasize and draw attention to the shoes. This does lead to cold ankles, but it was a sacrifice I was willing to make in the name of fashion. My fringe purse also added another element of disorganization and reminded me of the hanging straps seen on the runway.

The hair and makeup of the models acted as inspiration for leaving my hair down and adding a bright red lip. The bold lip especially stands out considering the darker palette of the rest of the look.

Overall, this outfit made me feel much cooler than I am in reality. It was a confidence boost to walk around in such an edgy and distinctive outfit. The true takeaway from this collection is to worry less about making an outfit perfect and have bit of fun with the untraditional.

Get My Look: 1. An army green coat. 2. An oversized T-shirt (the bigger the better). 3. The reddest bold lip you can possibly find!
