STYLE GURU STYLE: The Sea of Prada Shoulder Pads

The fall 2016 ready-to-wear line by Prada was empowering and sensational for womenswear, per usual. Prada has always been a fashion house to watch as seasons come and go, continuously reinventing trends and adding their own elements of class and femininity. For this collection, Prada emphasized the masculine, military-like silhouette for jackets and sweaters alike. Both the dark color scheme and strong shoulder pad jackets gave a World War Two essence—some of the models even wore sailor caps. This high-fashion look for outerwear was seen on almost every model during the show.

I translated the main elements of Prada’s show into my look, mimicking the utilitarian shape with a vintage Yves Saint Laurent cardigan. This piece alone brought the entire theme of the show into my outfit. The deep blue color, bold shoulder pads and gold YSL buttons brought together a balance of the sea and masculinity as seen on the fall runway. Since this piece was the main focus of my outfit, I kept the rest simple. A pair of black jeans and a black bodysuit underneath kept me comfortable all day, especially while dealing with the transition of winter to spring weather. Since I’m a fan of minimalism when it comes to accessories, I wore one gold clock necklace to complement the shine of the buttons. To add a personal and youthful touch to my outfit, I wore cheetah print Mary-Jane flats. This look is one of my favorites as it is comfortable and an effortless way to look slightly more than casual for a daytime look.

Get my look: 1. Shoulder pad sweater. 2. Bodysuit. 3. Mary jane flats.
