STYLE GURU STYLE: The Practical Parka

Let’s be honest—we all have a bit of an obsession with our parkas. They’re the clothing equivalent of a warm, fluffy blanket, and they somehow still manage to be flattering. I was recently examining the Hunter Original fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection and noticed parkas were definitely a dominant feature of the show. Parkas and other styles of jackets in browns, oranges and grays were a constant sight on the runway, an obvious sign that our beloved coats are here to stay. In the show, these jackets come off as very edgy and almost rebellious thanks to the harsh and reserved styling of the models. But there’s no reason to shy away because parkas can be styled to suit any fashion taste.

I styled my BCBGMAXAZRIA parka for a casual look designed to keep me warm and dry on my way to and from class. Although I chose a chunky gray knit scarf to keep me warm, this jacket would look great with a more colorful scarf or something with a pattern. I love the gray color because it matches almost my entire wardrobe, but I’m a big fan of uniquely colored parkas like cranberry ones. Although my parka is the star of the outfit, every superhero needs a sidekick—and that would be my L.L.Bean boots. These gems, which are constantly back ordered due to their extreme popularity, are the best winter shoes around. They’re comfortable, waterproof and extremely warm. Mix the two together and you have the perfect winter outfit.

Hunter Original’s show teaches us that style doesn’t always have to compromise practicality. The perfect parka will give you the comfort and warmth that you need to get you through the winter months while also keeping you stylish.
