This is literally the mother of all outfits. I took inspiration from the Ralph Lauren spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection, specifically an outfit featuring shorts that look exactly the ones I am wearing here. I think Ralph Lauren may have taken inspiration for his collection from the ’90s moms who wore their high-waisted shorts and pants effortlessly. These “cool moms” are definitely fashion muses.
I paired my thrifted olive green mom shorts with a black and white striped crop top from American Apparel and Sam Edelman ‘Gigi’ sandals. These more modern pieces give the outfit a twenty-first century twist. I accessorized with a black braided belt from Nordstrom, Topshop earrings and Rebecca Minkoff mini bag. This simple look is proof that mother really does know best.
Mom fashion has been in style lately. Mom jeans, mom shorts, overalls, baseball caps, scrunchies, mini backpacks, fanny packs and other clothing items your mother owned in the ’90s are making a comeback. If you want to covet her style, check out her closet and see if she has anything that can help you achieve the “cool mom” look. She’ll most likely be flattered that you think her fashion sense is fridge worthy.
If your mom got rid of all those ’90s clothes, there is still hope. Check out your local thrift shop and pop some tags! You’ll be sure to find a surplus of mom shorts and other mom-ish pieces. As angsty teens like to say, “It’s not a phase, mom!”
