STYLE GURU STYLE: The Comeback Stripe

July 29th, 2016 at 2:06am

It has always been a staple for a woman’s work wardrobe, but the classic striped button-down is making its mark in stores and on streets everywhere. I’m taking inspiration from Monse’s resort 2017 collection, where stripes marked structural garments and were paired with utilitarian-styled separates.

At first glance, Monse’s collection projects an air of simplicity, but each look grows more intricate as you study it more. The clothes give you drama without being over the top. It’s all about untucking your shirt and throwing on a pair of versatile pants that you can do anything in. With that mantra, I get a sense of dressing down in order to dress up. These looks require minimal effort but deliver a terrific amount of style through the movement and colors of the clothing. I love the idea of the comeback stripe, making waves for its versatility and easiness.

Although I’m sporting the opposite of bare feet, I put together an outfit that felt relaxed, but looked trendy.

To reproduce the essence of Monse’s collection for everyday wear, I combined the color black with light blue stripes. I usually pair blue stripes with denim to pull off a monochromatic look, but Monse’s collection dared me to go black. The result was a darker, more formal look that I would be able to wear in an office or casually on the street.

My oversized Madewell button-down mimics the oversized garments of Monse’s collection. This shirt is airy enough for the summer, but will look great under jackets in the fall. So, this is not a drill: invest in some stripes pronto.

Get My Look: 1. Any oversized striped button-down. 2. Black jeans. 3. A pair of chunky heels.
