STYLE GURU STYLE: Textures and Textiles

February 2nd, 2017 at 2:07am

History is bound to repeat itself and let’s face it, so are fashion trends.

Over the past couple of months, I felt like a time machine had transported me back to the late 1990s and early 2000s. I can’t say I’m complaining though because the latest fashion trends have been pretty dope. We all remember (even if we were too young the internet hasn’t let us forget) when Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears showed up to American Music Awards back in 2001 in their infamous head to toe denim ensembles. It was an intense fashion statement, to say the least. But I think we can all agree that the return of the denim movement in 2016 was a win for everyone.

Denim has a wide array of versatility when it comes to pairing it with various textures and colors. There truly are few limits and that’s why it has been one of my go-to looks this winter break. I suggest going for skirts that stand out or make a statement. The skirt I’m wearing has a crisscross caged pattern, although it’s a subtle touch, it ultimately transforms the look.

Along with being a huge advocate for denim, I am also enjoying the fact that turtlenecks and large-buckled belts have made a reappearance in the fashion headlines. A simple neutral turtleneck can be paired with just about anything and a bold statement belt can tie pretty much any outfit together (literally).

Although you may think that a denim mini skirt is a bit daring for the unforgiving temperatures of the northeast in the heart of winter, have no fear. A pair of lace textured stockings can do the trick. Instead of covering up your look with a chunky winter coat, instead, opt for an oversized scarf/shawl. It not only keeps you warm and cozy but also incorporates an additional mix of colors. To top off this winter look, I added a white knit puffball hat which is perfect for any bad hair day and my black suede booties to dress it up a bit.

I hope this post has inspired a new winter look for all you Fashionistas! Thanks for catching up. Stay rad.
