STYLE GURU STYLE: Texture Talks

Texture talks… It’s true; just ask Saint Laurent’s creative director Hedi Slimane. He definitely knew the power of texture when he designed the spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection. Throughout the show, the runway comes to life with an endless combination of textures that artfully contrast one another.

One particular outfit caught my attention. This ensemble incorporated unexpected textures and patterns, like leather, sequins and cheetah print, to create a truly unique and bold look. The look was finished off with more contrasts between the short skirt, heavy sweater and lightweight jacket. The whole outfit managed to have a causal feel despite the heavy layering and high end materials.

Taking inspiration from this ensemble, I decided to try my hand at pairing a mix of textures together for a bold yet casual look. My outfit consists of a raised, floral patterned, gray T-shirt and a crisp, white, asymmetrical skirt. To add some color, I paired a loose, pink, knit cardigan and cheetah print slides with calf hair for extra texture.

My outfit achieves the casual look I was going for through the loose cardigan and relaxed gray T-shirt. The white skirt acts as a statement piece that anchors the surrounding textures and solidifies the entire ensemble. My Ray-Ban sunglasses and simple gold jewelry give a sense of timelessness to the otherwise trendy aspects of my outfit.

The combination of textures and patterns is perfect for when I feel like making a statement that isn’t too overpowering.

Get My Look: 1. Relaxed T-shirt. 2. Asymmetrical skirt. 3. Cardigan. 4. Animal print sandals.
