STYLE GURU STYLE: Talking About Tees

Let’s talk about oversized T-shirts. They are extremely comfortable, easy to throw on, and versatile. Cotton T-shirts are coming back into relevance with high demand because of companies like Thrasher and Adidas. Even tour merchandise is contributing to the fashion hype, such as Kanye West’s Saint Pablo Tour and Justin Bieber’s Purpose Tour.

As an avid preacher of “style should be comfortable,” I own drawers full of T-shirts, a majority of which came from thrift shops and my dad’s closet. Personally when I wear a T-shirt out, I try to make it the focal point of the outfit. In this month’s look, I “borrowed” an oversized gray baseball T-shirt from my dad’s closet. To give the outfit more of a cleaned up look, I tied up the excess fabric in a bunch at the end. This tip is extremely easy to do and great to use when wearing high-waisted bottoms that you want to show off. But, I’m not done dressing up my shirt yet. I always encourage standout pieces of jewelry and mixing of metals to give an outfit an extra push to stand out amongst the rest, which in this outfit I chose a chunky silver necklace with an assortment of bronze bracelets and an accent pink watch.

For those Fashionistas that live for new eyeshadow palette releases and only want the brightest of highlighters, wearing a basic shirt allows you to run free with makeup creativity. For example, I choose more fiery orange colors for my eyes with a pop of white eyeliner at the ends of my black liner. Then naturally, I added a brighter highlighter to go with the warmer colors on my face. I chose a more glam makeup route to make up for the simplicity of the shirt, but a more natural look will look just as amazing!

Once the T-shirt is styled to exactly how you want it, the rest just comes easily. I paired mine with a leather pencil skirt for a more edgy grunge look. I threw on a bomber jacket to not only give the outfit a pop of color but also to stay as warm as possible in these colder winter months. Then, finishing up the look, I paired my chunky suede heels with slouchy thick socks to keep my feet nice and toasty.

So give it a try! Hit up a local thrift store, mall, or even a family member’s closet for some T-shirts, and make that basic top the highlight of your outfit.
