STYLE GURU STYLE: Suede Persuasion

Elvis knew best when he sang an entire song dedicated to his favorite blue suede shoes. The soft, chic material is timeless in my eyes, and is making a major appearance in the street style of many college kids this fall.

I first saw one of my favorite uses of suede in the form of a baby blue, suede T-shirt dress with fringe on the bottom. The dress was a part of Rebecca Minkoff’s spring 2016 resort collection, which I still find myself drooling over. In an attempt to put my own twist on Minkoff’s design, I switched out the lighter colors for a more fall-inspired palette. I also incorporated the army green color, which is a constant theme in her 2015 pre-fall collection.

By itself, suede has an heir of elegance about it which makes it a smooth choice for nighttime. Luckily, dressy pieces can always be paired with more casual items to create a street-style look for every day wear. I went for a daytime outfit in hopes of achieving the “sexy tomboy” appearance Minkoff references.

My ensemble is centered around a mini, teddybear-colored, suede T-shirt dress I found while window shopping at White Rabbit in downtown Iowa City. In preparation for my walk to the other side of campus, I paired the dress with flat, brown, leather Lucky Brand boots. I love leather shoes because they tend to look even better with age.

To contrast all of the brown in my outfit, I slid on one of my many thrifted, oversized flannels in the color of army green. The flannel helps to make the finished product look comfier and better suited for class.

After adding pieces to dress me down a little, shiny jewelry was a must. I chose a gold bracelet with detailed gems on each end, a pair of classic, tear-shaped earrings, and the pearl, heart-shaped necklace that can almost always be found around my neck. With a swipe of my favorite Milani Teddy Bare lipstick, I was out the door.
