STYLE GURU STYLE: Structure and Spice and Everything Nice

That’s what all girls are made of. Well, Isabel Marant seems to think their wardrobes at least should be. Her fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection sure proves this point. Whimsical and romantic pleats and ruffles juxtaposed with hard, structured elements gives this runway show its fierce, chic and strong presence. Marant styles soft elements of ease and grace with a distinct framework.

Playing with form and structure can make a woman feel like a force to be reckoned with. Marant uses these elements to show dynamic interest. Her pants and belts make a bold statement when accompanied by movement in the tops and skirts.

For my runway inspired look I chose to bring the strong, structured elements in with a bit of a girly vibe. I paired a loose-fitting black blouse with a leather skater skirt. I love how hard and soft textures complement each other. I tucked the top into the skirt to show more of the structured aspect. I want the form to speak for itself.

I’ve then topped this look with a powder blue blazer to add a bit more definition and androgyny. The shape of the shoulders makes for a very masculine silhouette, but when this is opposite a flirty mini, it takes on a more feminine and powerful form.

My shoes are a combination of feminine and edgy. The leather spiked heel and straps give a fierce interpretation, while the suede gives a more lush impression.

Being a law student, I love having these elements incorporated into my outfits. I feel powerful in the courtroom and the classroom.
