STYLE GURU STYLE: Stop! It’s Harem Time

In 1990, an iconic music video was released. MC Hammer’s music video for his hit song “U Can’t Touch This” featured lots of signature dance moves, spandex and most importantly: harem pants. MC Hammer and his background dancers were featured wearing loose, baggy pants with a long crotch that gathered in closely at the ankle. Because of this, harem pants grew in popularity and were given the nickname “hammer pants.” Recently, the flowy pants have once again surged in popularity and have been seen in many different runway shows.

Chanel’s resort 2015 collection showcased this trend by featuring a variety of chic pastel and patterned harem pants. Chanel’s Cruise collection runway show was presented on an island in the Middle East, where coincidentally, harem pants originated.

Although harem pants may be a trend that seems intimidating, I find that putting together outfits with these comfortable bottoms is easy and fun. Harem pants can be paired with a variety of things: a simple T-shirt for casual daily wear, a crop top for a night out or a white button-down shirt and a blazer for a more sophisticated look. However, when wearing harem pants, you have to make sure that the top you are wearing is shorter or falls at the waist. Anything below that will make you look un- proportional! I paired my floral harem pants with a loose, plain black tank top that ended right below my waist. I then added strappy black sandals, a simple gold statement necklace and spunky pink lipstick to give my outfit an edgy yet girly vibe.

This trend is one of my favorites right now. Harem pants are both comfortable and fashionable—perfect for summer! Don’t be afraid to grab yourself a pair this season. After all, it’s hammer time!
