STYLE GURU STYLE: Spring Vint-edge

April 13th, 2015 at 2:00am

Any time the weather seems even the least bit warm, I take advantage of it and dress to kill. I’m probably a more ready—maybe even a bit too ready—for spring and summer than most, but I’m not complaining. We can bring vibrant colors back into fashion and not shiver every time we step outside. I’d say that’s a good reason to be excited. Plus, spring and summer fashion just make me happy, you know? School stresses disappear as we soak in the sun’s rays. For the first time in a while, we even get to—dare I say it—bare our legs. I know; it has been a while. Having said that, I was super excited, to say the least, to debut my latest look.

I see similarities in between my look and alice + olivia’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear line, specifically amongst the bright color scheme, the patterns and some of the staple pieces, like bomber jackets and skirts. While both of our looks are classic, alice + olivia’s focuses on a preppier, more elegant style—one that I don’t typically wear. My outfit is a bit edgier with some vintage inspiration. I always want my style to reflect my wacky personality, so the brighter, quirkier and less refined, the better.

Rather than wearing an A-line maxi skirt, I opted for a high-waisted, ruffled mini skirt. Similar to alice + olivia’s model, I threw on bomber jacket and crop top, reminiscent of ’80s fashion. The coordination between my jacket and skirt emphasizes the pattern at hand. Take one look at me, and you’ll see that I committed to floral that day. My outfit is focused and structured, but rather than tying my hair back into a bun, I let my blonde locks fly free, and yes, I’ll admit that they, too, look like they were taken straight from the ’80s.

Knowing that my look was already bold, I added minimal jewelry. I didn’t want to go overkill. But in order to carry out the vintage aspect of my look, I wore some of my mom’s gold jewelry from the ’90s. It complements the look, dressing it up a bit, rather than taking it too far. I also sported my go-to Michael Kors watch simply because I couldn’t resist. But hey; it matches. The same goes for my cross-body bag. Not only does it match but it also brings out the rich colors in my skirt and jacket, making things feel more spring-like. As for the black wedges, they give an edge to the look. They, along with my crop top, break up the outfit’s brightness, adding some contrast to a very vibrant look.

What’s the moral of the story here? Find inspiration in other looks, but at the end of the day, it all comes down to you and what you want to wear. With spring and summer approaching, take advantage of those bright colors!
