STYLE GURU STYLE: Split Decisions

There are few situations that bring out my indecisiveness more than standing in line at Starbucks. To say that the bevy of choices and constantly changing menu is overwhelming to my coffee-deprived brain on early mornings would be an understatement. Between the lattes, the cappuccinos, the newly added flat white and my go-to iced coffee, the weight of the decision regularly causes me to contemplate running out of the store and forgetting about coffee completely. Unfortunately, this issue is not limited to the coffee shop. In fact, it manifests itself in many other ways in my daily life—most commonly in my closet.

I consider fashion to be an important aspect in my life, so deciding what to wear each day is not something I take lightly. Yet as a self-proclaimed decidophobic, the decision of how I’m going to style myself is a frequent cause of great distress to me. I often shop and dress according to my mood, giving my closet a wide variety of styles from which to choose. But while a large selection of clothing may initially seem like a good thing, it becomes a very big problem when my indecisiveness kicks in. Therefore, I often look to other sources for inspiration to ease my anxiety. This week, that inspiration came in the form of Isa Arfen’s resort 2016 collection.

Eclectic and glamorous with a folklore feel, Arfen’s collection was the stuff of decidophobics’ dreams. Consisting of many different styles, the show had enough kinds of  looks to keep any Fashionista entertained for days. It began with a sort of mix of tango and menswear, promptly moving on to peplum tops and flouncy gingham frocks. Yet the mix of styles did not stop even there. A few denim looks had a hot moment, quickly taken over by a brightly colored combination of Mexican inspired clothing with an ’80s twist. From start to finish, the collection was a flurry of surprises; yet somehow, it still managed to seem elegantly cohesive in a refreshingly modern way.

Taking Arfen’s indecisiveness as validation to be that way myself, I decided to forgo the traditional method of getting dressed and simply threw on everything that suited my fancy. Instead of choosing a dress or pants and a shirt, I decided to do both and paired a long shirtdress over a pair of my favorite jeans. To recreate the elegant nature of Arfen’s show, I cinched my waist with a leather belt and threw on a gold cuff for added measure. Overall, my look was preppy, classic and casual—a hodgepodge of many different styles, just the way I like it.

Get My Look: 1. Shirtdress. 2. Boyfriend jeans. 3. Flats.
