STYLE GURU STYLE: Sparta Meets ’70s

Let’s talk about the fall 2015 forecast with its bold combination prints, oversized silhouettes, peasant shirts and historic references that dominated the runways. The Burberry Prorsum fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection caught my attention with its bold fringe detailing and embellishments that were carried out by a bohemian vibe. It was reminiscent, earthy and strikingly feminine. Its folk-inspired prints, patterns and fabrication methods all created a pleasant cohesiveness. So naturally, I honed in on a nostalgic ’70s revival theme from the collection and translated it into my look. Because, who isn’t nostalgic of the ’70s?

This past weekend I was given this beautiful oversized poncho dress that came all the way from the Philippines. I thought of all the possible ways I could put this gem to work. I first pictured pairing it with thigh-high heels for a night out in some beautiful European country abroad or maybe throwing a tight topknot up to create a casual (and ventilated) outfit for a day of shopping. But before I make any quick trips to Europe or my hair grows out long enough to stay in any “top” anything, I wanted to debut it as a component of my STYLE GURU STYLE. This poncho dress and its print are inspired by the ’70s free spirited nature. Instead of going for layers, which the 90 degree weather here would disagree with, I went for a lighter, more colorful look that accommodates summer temperatures. The fabric is lightweight, breathable and creates a beautiful drape which makes it MVP as far as summer wear goes. Listen, I’m all for layers and earthy hues, but not at the expense of sweating out the dyes.

Moving on down: I had to pair this focal point with my staple gladiator sandals. First of all, everything goes with gladiator sandals, but any dress that hits above-the-knee complements especially well with a pair. This style has dominated the sandal world and is here to stay. As it runs its course we’ve seen variations from ankle height to thigh-highs with tassels or buckles and retailed by any brand that doesn’t live under a rock. This sandal is the saving grace of summer style as it’s hard to find a shoe that’s appropriate for the heat AND look good that is not a thong sandal or flip flop. I for one, own a gladiator in heel, flat, mid-calf and above-the-knee styles. And I promise, the Sparta movie references and questions never get old, ever.

Lastly (and always) I put a modern twist on these historic styles by bringing in a solid pop of rich color with my kate spade handbag. I love this bag with the ensemble because it isn’t a perfect color match to the poncho, yet it tactfully brings the colors out more vibrantly. Finally, the gold Chanel posts, watch and pulled back bun all complete the look to give it a current day-chic wear feel.

Get My Look: 1. Poncho dress. 2. Gladiator sandals. 3. Handbag.
