STYLE GURU STYLE: Soft Pop of Prints

I absolutely loved the play of subtle prints that Ace & Jig displayed in their fall 2016 ready-to-wear runway collection. It speaks directly to my style, as I love mixing unusual prints by bringing them together to make them look good with one another. The types of lightweight and breathable materials used in Ace & Jig’s collection were showcased in my personal look. My style is very comfortable, so I like to wear whatever makes me feel good and I am not restrained in any type of way; I like to feel free. In the collection there is one look that I would wear instantly off of the runway. It is definitely a representation of how I mix prints.

It took me a long time to get used to this trend because I thought prints were only supposed to go with a solid piece or it had to be a matching set. When I would see people mixing prints I would instantly hate the outfit, whether they were cohesive prints or not. Now that I’ve learned the trick behind mixing prints, I really appreciate when people give it a try because it adds a bit more excitement to the look. In all of my looks, I have to have an exciting statement piece in some way. With this look, my subtle pop of print mixing was my statement.

In my look, I wanted to combine fun and casual prints that would easily complement one another. In order for me to be comfortable in the prints that I mix, the prints have to match aesthetically and/or have a common color. If neither of these requirements are met, I feel unbalanced and have to question the look for a long time to figure out what is needed to make it all cohesive. So for this look, I felt as though my prints had the same geometrical aesthetic. I wanted to keep the look very casual and simple with a pop of color.

A lot of pieces in my closet are things I’ve found at the thrift store or discounted department stores such as Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. Here and there, I’ll find things I like from Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters, Missguided, etc. So for this particular look, my jacket is from my local thrift store, the shift dress is from T.J. Maxx, my backpack is a Steve Madden bag from Marshalls, my sandals were on sale at Steve Madden and my jewelry is from sellers on Poshmark, my new addiction!

Get My Look: 1. A grid print dress.  2. A long duster jacket.  3. Any kind of black strappy sandals.
