As the heat rises and the days grow longer, the festival-wear trend of summer has begun to reign supreme. And with nothing but high-waisted cutoff Levi’s and fringed crop tops everywhere you look, it’s easy to see why so many fall prey to this overdone cliche.
While many obviously embrace the festival look wholeheartedly, a fashionable few have grown weary of the trend. However, this begs the question of what to wear in the midst of summer. Shunning kimonos and knee-high gladiators may put you ahead of the crowd, but will it also leave you undressed and confused about your sartorial future? Thornton Bregazzi certainly doesn’t think so.
The Preen by Thornton Bregazzi spring 2014 collection is everything festival wear is not. Made up of structural pieces and crisp, clean lines, it’s straight out of a modern Fashionista’s dream. Though white is a predominant color in the beginning of the show, the designer slowly incorporates more and more color throughout, leaving the audience with an array of bright pastels and colorful geometric patterns. Avoiding any hint of boredom, Bregazzi included both sophisticated and playful looks by mixing beautifully structured pieces like his baby blue skort with more fun pieces like his neon miniskirt and metallic silver top. The blend of high and low is what makes this collection so perfectly suited for summer, and with an assortment of options ranging from conservative dresses to tiny skirts made for the club, the Preen by Thornton Bregazzi spring 2014 collection provides no shortage of inspiration for any occasion summer may bring.
Though I was obsessed with Bregazzi’s entire spring line, his structural pastels undoubtedly spoke to me the most. I fell in love with the way the innocent colors contrasted with the strong lines of many of his pieces, ultimately leading me to use these elements as inspiration in creating my own outfit.
Miraculously, I happened to stumble across this blue skort months ago. While I had some difficulty deciding what to wear with it for some time, I was filled with ideas the instant I discovered the Preen spring collection. The skort itself is the perfect embodiment of Bregazzi’s show, but I felt that my outfit needed something unexpected to make it my own. My boxy top was the ideal solution to this problem, incorporating both Bregazzi’s use of geometric patterns with a modern but chic silhouette that brought the look together. To finish my ensemble, I added mod black sunglasses and silver sandals as a nod to Bregazzi’s use of styles from both the past and the future.
The next time you pull that floral headband over your long hair parted down the middle, stop and think for a second. Summer is a time for fun, and you shouldn’t forget to have fun with your style too! It may seem difficult, but it is possible to get that summer sexy look without becoming a clone of every other girl you know.
The Preen by Thornton Bregazzi spring 2014 line is the perfect inspiration for Fashionistas looking to expand into new style territories. With looks that are light and fun, the collection is a fantastic source to gather ideas and become a stylish, more original version of you this summer.
