STYLE GURU STYLE: Serving Up Marsala

Pantone’s much anticipated announcement of “Color of the Year” may not have come as a radical surprise to fashion and interior design fanatics. Whatever your reaction to the big news, there’s no disputing the elegance and wearability of 2015’s hue du jour, Marsala. This rich, earthy tone creates an effortlessly dramatic look when splashed on apparel or leather accessories.

Jenny Packham’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection incorporated several Marsala looks and served as inspiration for my first take on the 2015 trend. Packham accented one particular Marsala gown with metallic elements and rich, gold-toned jewels to introduce a feminine yet bold look. Inspired by this fantastic combination, I used statement jewelry and metallic garments to style a Marsala look of my own.

I knew I wanted this ruffled Tahari coat to be the focal point of this look, clearly due to its appropriate color. I chose a metallic bronze skirt to accent the coat with elegant color, and an A-line cut to keep the look youthful and fun. For a casual and sporty feel, I tucked in a white, varsity-inspired T-shirt from Gap. To emulate the jewel embellishment of Packham’s design, I accessorized with a crystal and gold hardware statement necklace. A pair of tights and casual ankle boots finish off this winter look easily.

Packham’s use of Marsala in her spring collection inspires me to find fresh and creative ways to work this beautiful color into my everyday look. From scarves to footwear to blouses, the color of the year is sure to be a game changer in my 2015 wardrobe.

Get My Look: 1. Marsala-colored jacket. 2. Metallic A-line skirt. 3. Statement necklace with a hardware emphasis.
