STYLE GURU STYLE: Seeing Stripes

Have you ever seen a runway show and thought to yourself “I could never wear that?” It may have been the silhouette of the dress and the structure was out of your comfort zone. Perhaps, it was the mix of prints and wild mesh cutouts that sent you running back to the comfort of your own closet. I find that when I watch runway shows online or in person, I first look at the full outfit. I then question myself “Do I have similar items in my closet?” It is intimidating for a college student to see runway shows and get discouraged from trying out the look due to a large price tag attached to the garment. Don’t fret, Fashionistas. I have a look for you that is foolproof way to look runway ready with items you already have in your closet.

In Sonia Rykiel’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear runway show, Kendall Jenner models a classic look. She rocks cream trousers accompanied by a tucked in cream jacket. With one button ajar, striped red and blue shirt peeks out. It’s a classic look due to the same color scheme for the jacket and trousers. The stripes add an eye catching factor to the look.

For my take on this look, I first paired a black and white striped sleeveless turtleneck. I paired burgundy trousers with a similar cinched ankle detail as Sonia Rykiel designed for her spring 2015 collection. Rather than a structured jacket, I paired a burgundy cardigan to add some flexibility and movement through my busy college days. Adding the pop of stripes with burgundy cardigan and trousers keeps me looking polished but also incorporates the monochromatic top and bottom look Sonia Rykiel forecasts for spring 2015.

Get my look: 1. Striped top. 2. Burgundy trousers. 3. Burgundy cardigan.
