STYLE GURU STYLE: Seeing Print

As a self-confessed print lover, you can imagine my delight when I set my eyes on Thakoon’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Thakoon went all out and challenged our views on how prints are to be styled and combined. The collection sported stunning pieces with up to three different patterns combined; think polka-dots paired with floral. It’s definitely not an easy task to pull off but Thakoon offered a fresh and almost uncomfortable twist. As opposed to toning down the drama prints tend to create, the designer let it rage wild.

I gave my version on the bold print trend and recreated my look using ankara (African print). I had to resist the urge of reaching for a plain piece so combining this look put me way out of my comfort zone. However, I realized that fashion doesn’t always have to be comfortable. It should challenge and inspire you to take your personal style a tad bit further. That’s what makes it fun. Plus, never underestimate the power of a good black waist belt and black sandals. They help pull together an ensemble beautifully and belts create structure and the illusion of a smaller waist.

Prints can be overwhelming, I understand. If matching print on print is too difficult an idea to wrap your head around, try reducing it to little pieces (accessories, jewelry, bags, shoes etc.). Think of it as a personal challenge to push your personal style a step further. If you never wear print, incorporate one printed item. If you usually include one printed piece, add a second and so forth. See how far you can push yourself but remember to always stay true YOU.
