STYLE GURU STYLE: Security Blanket

Just as Australia is heading into winter, I find myself looking for ways to slowly transition into the colder months without immediately covering up head to toe. For this look, I drew inspiration from multiple aspects of Thakoon Addition’s fall 2015 ready-to-wear show to create a seasonally transitional outfit. The collection heavily features a combination of plaid and checked patterns on cape coats and jackets. My favorite looks showcased how to effortlessly wear these pieces on top of gray and cream hues and light denim.

Capes are a perfect way to add some extra warmth to an outfit without having to haul out a thick, bulky coat. Now, I’m sure you must be thinking what a fine line there is between pulling off a checked cape coat and looking like you’ve draped any old blanket around your shoulders and are heading off to a picnic. I promise you, pulling it off is entirely possible! Underneath my double-sided cape, I wore a simple dark gray top with a cute pocket detail. Now every girl out there has at least one denim skirt in her closet, but I chose to step away from the omnipresent circle skirts this time. Instead, I popped on a vintage, high waisted cut-off to make the outfit a touch more unique.

Keeping with the aesthetic from Thakoon’s collection, I styled this look with a pair of simple black gusset boots and a slicker-than-usual hairstyle. Typically my hair is what brings an aspect of movement to any of my looks, but this time I was happy to let the cape do most of the work!

Get My Look: 1. ASOS check cape. 2. Denim, mid-wash buttoned skirt. 3. Tony Bianco black gusset boots.
