STYLE GURU STYLE: Scheme Team

Scarves. Hats. Sweaters. Sound familiar? As the temperature drops the articles of clothing required to combat the cold increases. Some may disdain the winter months, but I rejoice at the increased variety for fashionable expression.

Designers also seize the opportunity of layering, as is evidenced in the Polo Ralph Lauren fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. A scarf and a hat can serve to accent or even bring together an entire outfit while simultaneously serving functional purposes. This was the goal of my outfit: not only to keep me warm but to keep me looking good in the process.

Adding so many accessories to an outfit may seem daunting, but a tactic that I use is to pick a color scheme and create a balance within my look. In this particular outfit, I paired maroon high-waisted skinny jeans with a maroon slouchy-beanie, and a slouchy cream-colored sweater with taupe ankle boots. I bring the whole look together with a textured scarf full of fall colors.

In the Polo Ralph Lauren collection, looks either adhere to a color scheme or remain neutral except for an accent piece. Accessories or even articles of clothing can be used to make a basic outfit pop by adding a different color or texture into an otherwise uniform mix. For example, the scarf in my outfit brings in a plethora of colors as well as a dramatically different texture from the rest of my look.

I put my pants on one leg at a time like everyone else in the morning, but perhaps I put a little more thought into the aesthetics of my outfits than I would like to admit. Whether you want to rock a basic look with some simple accents or coordinate every single article on your body, this is how you can start to look like you gave your outfit some thought!

Get My Look: 1. A big, slouchy sweater. 2. High-waisted jeans. 3. Matching hat and scarf.
