Each runway season there is a runway show that just blows you out of your seat. This is how I felt with the Jean Paul Gaultier spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection. Best known for his lavish corset designs, he was expected to deliver a breathtaking and over-the-top collection. The black leather theme dominated the runway with bulky buckles and gold detailing. When recreating a Gaultier look, you have to go all the way, and even that falls short of emulating such an iconic designer’s haute-couture.
So, you could already guess that I had to muster the courage to recreate this look as best I could. If you know me well you already know that I tend to play it cool year-round in black apparel. In the spring and summer I tend to ditch black for more colorful options but I did not hold back this time. I paired my comfy white tee with a black sleeveless leather vest. This vest is very unique because of its gold detailing in the zipper and buttons. The thick buckle on the bottom was the cherry on top to this Gaultier-inspired look. My disco pants were the only suitable pants for the occasion as they have a shiny finish to them. To play off of the gold theme I wore my gold chain leather ankle boots.
In order to achieve the appropriate grungy hairstyle for my outfit, I gathered three sections of hair at the highest point of my head and styled them in twists from my forehead to my crown. I then gathered all loose hair in a ponytail and sprayed my hair with beach spray for texture (it actually tastes salty like beach water but don’t say I told you so), and violà – a Gaultier-inspired hairstyle by yours truly. Make sure to try it out!
I definitely had a lot of fun recreating this runway look! I loved playing with all the different textures to achieve a rough and tough Gaultier biker chick look.
