STYLE GURU STYLE: Retro Garden Party

Style Guru Style

The most recent Tory Burch show made its debut down a bright blue catwalk. Her spring 2014 collection features both silhouettes and textiles that represent a retro-chic, yet sophisticated individual. To complement the ’60s style and botanical-esque garments, her models carried garden-inspired totes made from wicker weaves and leather lattice complete with real flowers.

She mentions her inspiration derives from Romy Schneider, an Austrian film actress and fashion icon who radiated a melancholic, yet romantic aura. I wouldn’t necessarily describe my personal style as feminine, but taking my huge soft spot for sixties fashions into consideration, I will admit that I was all about this collection. It’s like the ladies of Mad Men got the day off and were on their way to some whimsical garden party.

One can dream of dressing up and going to cute little tea parties in pristine gardens, or you can simply find a way to rock this look according to your schedule. Personally, summertime gives me more time to travel, attend family gatherings or weddings, which also allows for me to dress differently than I normally would on my average day around campus.

This ensemble is clearly not something I would wear every day going to class, and I think the size of my basket is a clear indication of that. If I were to wear something like this to class, my basket would probably need to be big enough to fit food for five. Both Kate Spade and Tory Burch have proved that baskets aren’t restricted for picnics in the park and they can make super adorable purses.

I tried to incorporate both the sixties bohemian and mod styles into my look by pairing an off-the-shoulder peasant crop top with a geometric patterned pencil skirt. In order to keep the skirt and purse the focus of my outfit, I kept everything else relatively light and neutral. My floppy hat keeps me shaded from the sun and matches my woven purse. I wore a pair of off-white cut-out wedges and square-rimmed vintage sunglasses.

Get My Look: 1. A small, chic basket bag 2. A funky pencil skirt 3. And a versatile floppy hat.
