STYLE GURU STYLE: Remaining Neutral

Remember the movie Wish Upon a Star? If you haven’t seen it, where were you during the ‘90s? It’s on Netflix and I need you to go watch it now. It was one of my favorite movies and the Disney Channel would play it all the time. I always wanted to be Alexia Wheaton (played by Katherine Heigl) because her outfits were everything. With her furry scrunchies, white nylon knee-high socks, metallic platform sandals and velvet crop tops, she had every ‘90s girl’s dream wardrobe. As soon as I put this outfit together, I immediately thought of Alexia Wheaton. Although it’s more of a modern take on what she would have worn, I feel like she would definitely approve.

For this look, I found inspiration from J.Crew’s spring 2015 ready to wear collection. The series emphasized on a color palette of soft neutrals with pops of blues and citrines. To recreate a similar look, I started off by pairing my navy and white striped T-shirt dress with a gray jacket. Although I’m not sure what exact style it is, the jacket’s silhouette reminded me of a blend between a parka and a trench coat. I typically prefer these kinds of jackets in a traditional forest green color, but I thought that the gray color was different. Even though the weather is slowly warming up, it’s still a little chilly outside. So I paired my strappy platform sandals with my knee-high socks for added coverage and warmth. Okay, how amazing are these shoes though? I’ll admit that the platform was intimidating at first and it took some getting used to, but I’m obsessed with them. They’re great for any occasion, which may sound bizarre because they’re not your typical heel. But I’ve dressed them up for special events and down for nights out with my friends. Every time I wear them I get compliments on them because they’re so unique.

For accessories, I kept it simple with silver midi rings, large black sunglasses and a light blue backpack. I love pastels for the spring, and this mini backpack added a little pop of color to my look. My closet is mostly neutrals, but accessories are an easy way to add color to any outfit. Small backpacks like this are great if you’re looking for a cool alternative to a purse. They’re perfect for music festivals, traveling or running errands.

Get My Look: 1. A mini backpack. 2. A drapey parka. 3. A T-shirt dress.
